Tips for improving posture

This is my first post so I hope that I'm posting in the right area. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to improve posture? I've been really tall all my life and have the WORST posture. It's getting to the point where it's really starting to hurt my shoulders. I'd really like to stand up straight, but I feel like it's a part of my being. Hopefully this doesn't sound too dumb!

Anyway, has anyone else ever had this issue and overcome it?

Thanks for any pointers :-)

A couple of activities have really improved my posture; horseback riding and dance (ballroom). These both require good posture. Being aware of my posture in my lessons made me more aware of it the rest of the time.

I've heard that core strengthening like yoga and pilates can also help with posture. You may want to see a chiropractor as well.

I've had bad posture my whole life, probably from being tall, bigger chested and hunching forward to "hide" myself. I have chronic back pain and go see a chiropractor to deal with it.

One thing I am hoping will help with back pain/posture is strengthening my core muscles by doing planks, side planks, crunches, reverse crunches, etc. If that fails, at least I'll get a flatter tummy

Those are the exact reasons why I've always hunched! Now that I'm older it seems silly sometimes, but sometimes it's hard to break 30 year habit!

It seems near impossible to break such an ingrained physical habit. My grandpa, bless him, would always tap my back to remind me to sit up straighter, but if you're just not used to being concious of it, it's hard to remember. Maybe we should start walking around with books stacked on our heads ever night
