Using wii for exercise, has anyone had much luck doing that?

My physical therapist has suggested that I could supplement our workouts by using a Wii for exercise on the days I do not see her. Has anyone had much luck using their Wii as a serious cardio workout tool? Right now we are working on building stamina and walking more and more each week, we also do stairs and water aerobics.

I use mine nearly everyday :)
I bought EA Sports Active 2 Personal Trainer for cardio, and it is AWESOME. It comes with a HRM and motion sensors, so the calories burned is very accurate and you can push yourself if you see your HR is a little low. On my off days with Active, I use Just Dance 2 for fun. I love my Wii and don't know where I would be without it.

Highly recommend wii fit... love the yoga and all the games on it. Plus it is funny...
  • I used mine everyday when first started working out. I loved it. It helped me build enough stamina to be able to move to the next step. After the Wii I started taking a class at my local rec center. Now I am doing ripped in 30. I have come a long way from my Wii but it was the first exercise that I had done since grade school. I would absolutaly recomend it for anyone who just needs to get up and moving. It really does help build stamina and ist FUN too. Good luck with your journey.
  • Since I'm barely walking to the bathroom and back, I use Wii tennis in my wheelchair. It's a small cardio workout, but better than nothing. I hope to add more as I recover from my surgery.

Since you mentioned you were building stamina with walking, I recommend Walk it Out for the Wii as well as using the Free Walk on Wii Fit Plus. Both of those should be good supplements for what you are currently doing.

    I highly recommend it.

I figure that anything you do to get you up off the couch and moving is a good thing! Whether or not it's a good workout for you depends on your fitness level and how much you put into it. If you're sitting on your couch and flicking your wrist then it won't do much for you, but if you're up and moving it definitely can. The other night I burned 550 cals in 75 mins doing a combo of tennis, obstacle course and steps.

You didn't say why you're doing PT. I had my knees replaced a year ago, and the Wii really helped me get moving again. I think doing the side-to-side movements in the step programs really helped to strengthen and stabilize my knees, and it's still helping to strengthen my quad muscles.

I use Xbox with my friend once in a while and I ALWAYS feel sore the next day, so I would say go for it... whatever keeps you moving!

Wii Fit Plus might be a good start but the balance board has a weight capacity of 330 lbs. Another alternative that would work well is Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds DVD's. She's really good at everyone just going at their own pace and you can do it in segments, increasing as you can do more.

I do Zumba on it regularly.. My HRM says I burn between 340-500 calories in less than hour depending on which program I doing.

Personally I haven't done the wii enough to monitor any progress and I didn't have HRM at the time either. What I can say is that my sister did Just Dance 2 faithfully every day for a few months and lost around 20 lbs I believe. She didn't change many habits but she danced a LOT. It differs for everyone but the I LOVE the wii for excercise and I'm going to start doing it again!

I only workout at home so the Wii had been awesome. I LOVE EA active 2 and it really does give a challenging workout for a "game". I also really love Gold's Gym Cardio workout...It's a boxing themed workout and while the graphics are kind of lame it gives a great cardio workout and it's fun. Wii fit is fun for games and low calories burns but I would highly recommend the ones I mentioned for a decent workout.

I have recently started using the Boxing program in the Wii Sports game that comes with the console. It is an awesome upper body workout with great cardio if you punch hard and fast. I reached my max HR (171) for the first time in about 5 minutes on it the other day. I think I am going to try out the Gold's Gym Cardio Boxing game that someone else suggested.

To the OP- I just read your profile and you have been thru quite an ordeal! Sounds like you are fortunate to have survived that. If you are still having mobility issues, the Boxing programs are something you can do sitting down if you need to, and still get a great cardio workout and calorie burn.
Best wishes to you for your continued improvement. It may seem overwhelming at this point, but keep at it and you will continue to get stronger. You will be amazed at how resilient your body can be and how quickly you can improve.

Yes! Used the the Wii after my knee surgery. Unable to get outside, and was recouping in the house. I was watching a lot of tv, and thought it was a silly waste of time until I decided to start playing with the Wii. Best results came from the yoga program. My motto soon became, "Yoga is not for wimps!". Good luck and have fun.

  • My boyfriend lost over 25lbs by playing tennis on the wii every day alone. He didn't even change the way he was eating.

I've used it for umba 2 and zumba core. They are both awesome.
