Eating Disorder...?

I am really confused right now. I know I do not have a healthy relationship with food, but I want to change that and I don't really know how. It is rare if I make it up to 1,000 calories in a day, most stay below 700. I go for days on end without eating and am a compulsive overexcersiser. I want to go to my doctor to get help but I don't know how to bring it up. I am at a healthy weight so I feel like theyll take one look at me a turn me away. I don't know, Im jut scared and feel really lost...

  • I don't know if you necessarily have an eating disorder. I eat low calorie like that too, and exercise a lot. If you are going actual full days without eating though - that is a problem because well obvious health reasons, however my husband (blessed with some gene that makes him forget hes hungry) probably would never eat if i didn't remind him either - so you could just be lucky :) But if you are concerned I would talk to a doctor - just to be safe. Good luck <3

Just say exactly what you have said here, you don't have a healthy relationship with food, are consistently depriving your body of food, don't eat at all some days, are overexercising. Disordered eating is a broad church, people who are apparently healthy or overweight can have them. You might meet the criteria for 'eating disorder not otherwise specified' if not for anorexia or bulimia for example.

This is absolutely unhealthy. Don't be scared to talk to someone. They will not look at your normal weight and dismiss you. You know how you feel and you need to tell your doctor. They should refer you to someone who can help you figure yourself out. Good luck!

How long you go without food is not the only qualifier for having an eating disorder. Eating 700-1000 calories per day is abnormal. There may be some healthy people who do eat that much due to atypical factors, but most are not.

OP, if you suspect you may have an ED, you probably do. You are just going to have to drum up the courage to ask your doctor for help and resources because you more than likely can't get do it alone. Maybe say you are concerned that you are getting too obsessive with food and exercise and would like an assessment/diagnosis to see if you have an eating disorder.

See an ED specialist if you can, especially if you are unhappy with your body-image, which definitely indicates an ED with your eating patterns. GPs are notoriously stupid about eating disorders and may not give you the help you really need.

If its hard to talk about, perhaps you could print out what you wrote and ask your health care provider to read it.

We are unqualified to diagnose eating disorders. Obviously, doing what you are doing now will eventually cause severe damage to your body. If you can bring yourself to do it, I highly recommend seeing a mental health professional about this. Hear me out. There is no more shame in seeing a specialist in this type of health issue than there is to see an Oncologist for cancer or a Dentist for your teeth. Many of us deal with emotional issues throughout our lives. 10% of men and approximately 1/3 of the women will deal with depression at some point in their lives... and that is only one form of mental/emotional health issue. This means that YOU ARE NOT ALONE... Any Dr. who would turn you away with this deserves to not have your business. Keep looking until you find somebody who will help you... This is YOUR life and you only get one of them... You deserve to live it to the fullest extent that you can. May you find peace with yourself and be able to quickly overcome this situation in your life. Take charge of YOUR life.

Hey hun it certainly sounds to me at the very least you have disordered eating if not a full blown eating disorder.

Suggestion number 1: Get rid of MFP OR use MFP to make an active effort to eat a minimum of 1200 calories a day, increase slowly if you have to but I'd suggest deleting entirely. I've been in recovery for 6 years and still need to be VERY VERY careful about not falling back into old habits while counting my calories. Adding friends who DO NOT HAVE DISORDERED EATING helps me quite a bit, as they keep me in check.

Suggestion Number 2 (And more important): TALK TO SOMEONE ! A therapist, a doctor, a school nurse, a teacher, your parents...the list could go on and on, just speak to someone so you can get the help you need.

Suggestion Number 3: Realize a life chasing the unattainable perfect body is one in which you can never be happy. I lost so much because of my ED and honestly gained nothing. No matter how thin I got it wasn't enough.

When you do get help see a therapist who SPECIALIZES in eating disorders. ED's are very difficult to treat and a lot of therapists just aren't qualified to do so. Make sure you get set up with a nutritionist as well. I went into full blown inpatient hospitalization for 2 months until I gained a certain amount of weight after an incident but I was in medical danger and needed to get my weight up, while you may not need inpatient, a partial day program where you have a treatment team and group and info session may be very helpful.

The help is there, you jut have to ask for it. Best of luck! I truly hope you find health and happiness. Life is so much better now that I've recovred. It isn't an easy road but it's worth it <3

^ That is VERY important. I used a site called FitDay years ago, and it really helped develop my ED. While MFP can be a great tool, in can also be very damaging to someone with an eating disorder.

Please see your doctor a.s.a.p. If you're not comfortable talking to the doctor you see now, ask friends/family for reccomendations. You know yourself better than anyone else. If this isn't how you used to eat and exercise and you don't like how this makes you feel, then you need help finding your way back to healthy. I also suggest looking up ANAD on line. (Anorexia nervosa and associated disorders) . This is a organization devoted to helping people with eating disorders. Keep reaching out and we'll keep offering support.

there is no cookie cutter behavior or appearance/weight for an eating disorder. i was in recovery for a long time from ednos restrictive, and have relapsed a while ago. go talk to your doctor. it doesn't matter if you are a healthy weight or not. you don't have a healthy relationship with food, or you wouldn't feel the need to restrict and burn off calories. and if you are concerned and question that you may have disordered eating, then definitely go talk to someone because that is not healthy, and you will end up getting very sick if it continues. i wish you the best of luck and feel free to add me for support if you need.

^^^ Do go to the doctor and empathise how unhappy and scared this is making you. You are obviously aware that something is wrong and any doctor worth his salts will book you in for a proper pyschological assessment at least.

I sympathise about people thinking it's just a phase - my doctor initially told my mother that my bulimia was a temparary phase and that i would grow out of it - 14 odd years and it still trips me up from time to time.
  • This is coming from a professional in the mental health field:

This is disordered eating, yes. I think you should try and see a counsellor because it is obviously causing you stress. Perhaps a nutrionist and ED specialist would be helpful too.
  • I decided to search the forums to see the ways in which EDs have been brought up and discussed, because I started on MFP last fall in what nearly turned into a relapse of the anorexia and bulimia I have been fighting for nearly half my life. While it made me more aware of what I was putting into my body, that awareness soon turned into hyper-awareness and obsession, and so I knew I had to step away.

I am back today because I want to take charge of my health in a new way, a way that allows me to be aware of what I'm consuming without hyper-focusing on it. Granted, I don't yet know if MFP is really the right place for me, but what I do know is that I would like to get some real, professional treatment in the coming year. I would highly advise you do the same.

Many hugs and all the holiday love and cheer in the world!
