Quads are now too big..

Hi everyone
So I feel I'm in a bit of a viscious cycle. I lost 40 pounds which left my legs all flabby..so I started weight training. About a month ago I got to a strage where I was really happy with them. They were thin but defined. Now they're jjust too muscley! When I turn to the side especially my quads look huge. For cardio I do bodyattack classes and run..but running is another confusion!! I heard people say the best way to lose weight is by doing HIIT but I recently read that HIIT also builds a lot of muscle compared to just running at the same pace...so I dont know what to do!! I really want to look toned but I want to look elegant still and not too bulky..
(and my diet is very clean..around 12-1500 cals a day but its all meat veg fruit and protein shakes. Maybe I should lay off the protein subsitutues??)

the only thing that builds a lot of muscle is a caloric surplus and heavy weight training
HIIT is an intense form of cardio and cardio does not build muscle0 -

Have you measured your quads? Have they actually got bigger or is it that they just have a more defined appearance? Since you're eating at a calorie deficit, what's probably happening is that they look more muscle-y because of the amount of fat you've lost. When you were happier with them, you probably had slightly more fat, giving them a "softer" look.0

My thighs look much bigger than they used to, but are 2" smaller in diameter.

HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, I would love my quads to grow some more, they are pretty big now, but I need more definition...

i have big legs too... its a good thing to have genetics wise... just sucks that you have to buy new jeans all the damn time... and HIIT doesnt build nearly as much muscle as any type of resistance training... plus u want muscle its the fat that makes ur legs look like sh-t0

"Strong is the new skinny" generally means you will have really good muscle definition, and trust me, most of us guys think it is really hot..... For me, ultra hot.0 -

If you don't want to build muscle, then why protein shakes? I would quit them and fill in with real food. I am personally trying to build a little muscle, but only have one or two shakes per week after really intense workouts.
And if you don't like the way your thighs look, then you can always quit squatting heavy and/or replace some or all of your HIIT cardio with steady state cardio. I have the opposite problem. Training for a half marathon, so not doing enough to build my quads, but after my race in February, I will try to bulk a little.
And I agree with the others, at that deficit, you can't be building much muscle--it's more likely that you are still reducing body fat and the muscles are just easier to see.0 -

If you don't want to build muscle, then why protein shakes? I would quit them and fill in with real food. I am personally trying to build a little muscle, but only have one or two shakes per week after really intense workouts.0
