How to use measuring tape consistently?

I measured myself back in April and then again last night. I wasn't/am not extremely overweight so I wasn't expecting a major loss in term of inches, but despite losing 15lbs, according to the measuring tape I've gotten larger in some areas!!! Not terribly worried because my clothes are definitely fitting looser, and I'm assuming I'm just not measuring the same as in April? When I was measuring around my stomach I wasn't sure if I should push it out as far as I could, or try to have a normal stance or what. Because usually when I'm standing/walking I usually suck in a bit....
How do you ensure you are measuring consistently?

I made myself a little spreadsheet and i noted the places I measured, ie, natural waist, 1" above belly button, hipbones. Etc so that each time I can try to be as close to the same spot.0
