doctor / nurse has challenged me

It seems that my glucose and cholesterol readings are on the rise. I have changed my diet but have agreed that after 3 months and retesting that unless the numbers are improving a different course of action, that being higher dosage, is in order.
Competitive individual that I am I will win this challenge no matter what it takes.
First step is paleo, second step is exercise. Exercise is easy in the summer but when it's -20℃ outside in the snow and ice it's on the elliptical machine indoors. 3 weeks in Ka'anapali will make it somewhat more tolerable but, at least at the moment, I'm enthused and ready to go

Good luck, I know numbers can be changed with diet and exercise. My question is: why paleo?0 -
try going vegetarian for that time. I did... I ate strawberries, blueberries, bell peppers, salads... cut out all red meats and eat lean chicken (the breasts) and fish only at dinner. most of your foods need to be fresh and simple without sauces and shoyu or salts... pepper is okay.
no whites... white bread, white rice, pastry, noodles, gravy,.... cut out all processed foods and high salty or sugary stuff...
I drink lots of green tea and water.
I had triglyceride levels up to 600 a couple years back, and was able to get it down to 80. it takes time but in the long run it's worth it. I now can eat the breads and meats in moderation and with exercise. just make most of your food clean and fresh and it should be well.
you mentioned Ka'anapali... you in Maui? I'm on Oahu.... moving to Texas in a year tho'...0 -

I'd love to know this too, ive been seeing alot of people doing paleo recently...0 -
Paleo would not be good if you plan on the red meats... just do the veggies and lean cuts of meat. the red meats now days have more fat than they did a long time ago. eat clean.0

Read the Engine2 Diet, those people had amazing results with blood pressure and cholesterol!!!0

It can be done. In two years I've lost 50 pounds and my cholesterol has gone down 40 points just this year alone with no special food other than eating healthy.0

I got here much the same way. If Paleo works for you, that's great...but there's no need to be so restrictive. I watch my saturated fats (keep them less than 15) and just generally eat healthier. I eat a lot more fish, particularly tuna and salmon and I take a krill oil supplement daily. Haven't been back for blood work, that's not until March...but I'm definitlely hoping for some positive results. I can tell you quantifiably that my blood pressure has substantially decreased since my September visit.0

my nurse said I seemed to be an all or nothing kind of person to which I had to agree. I've done low carb diets before, lost weight only to gain it back as I added carbs, usually uncontrollably. I realize that, at least for me, my history is that carbs are readily available, quick to make or snack on and that once I start I can't quit, hence no sugar, no grain which leads me to paleo.
Why paleo - I think the answer is mathematics. You get fuel from carbs, protein and fat. Carbs are considered a non-essential macro nutrient. Given that your body can make all the glucose it needs elimination of carbs won't kill you but no protein or no fat will. Back to math - since you need 0 carbs and you can only utilize a minimal amount of protein most of your calories will come from fat. Paleo, and lots of other low carb diets provide that but paleo has an easy to use flowchart that makes food selection easy, and I like easy. Here's a link to a copy of the flow chart copyright by Nicole Voelzke - http://makin8.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/no-grains-or-dairy-whaaaat/
Why paleo is the wrong question for me. Why beats how in the battle for success is my motivational statement and it means that it doesn't matter how you get there, you will find a way if the reason you want to get there is important enough to you. Even before seeing the nurse I had a "why", not sure what it was but I really wanted to change and make it permanent, maybe that's the why.
So paleo is merely a "how" for me, it comes with an easy to use flowchart so picking the foods is simple, I happen to really like beef and chicken, the paleo vegetables and nuts agree with me and possibly most important of all, no hunger pangs.
I hope this makes sense and thank you very much for your welcome to what I hope is a long and enjoyable journey together0 -
my mention of Ka'anapali refers to our upcoming 3 week vacation in January. Edmonton, Alberta, where I live, is generally cold with snow on the ground beginning in October and hopefully ending by late April although it can snow even in late May and often sees early snowfall in September.
It will be 5 weeks in Hawaii in 2013, 2 weeks later in the year on Kauai. I'm a big fan of Kauai coffee, love visiting their plantation. I follow them on Facebook and their daily pictures I find inspirational. The Hawaiian people really love their children and their culture and I smile whenever I see them.0
