I'd like help on how to read those (from the food database):

"Banana: Medium (7" to 7-7/8" long)"
"Potato: 1 potato (2-1/2" dia)"

What is the unit of measurement used? And does the quotation mark always refer to that particular unit when talking about length?

And probably the stupidest question I'll ever ask here lol: how do you read 7-7/8 or 2-1/2?

For one second I thought it was "2 minus 0.5", ok why not... but "7 minus 7/8" ... seriously? people are not that twisted lol.
So then I thought it could mean "2 + or - 0.5" but then again "7 + or - 7/8"?!...

    The quotation marks stand for "inch" , as in 5'7" for height.

    The dash is most likely for "and" (that's how I read it)

    Seven inches to seven and seven eighths inches (almost 8 inches)
