Hi Guys - I've been living abroad for the past 3 months in Mexico, I now have another 3 months here, this time living back in civilisation (been in the sticks doing research with no water/electricity etc). I've put on close to 10lb in the last 3 months due to the high carb diet of rice and potatoes due to having a lack of fridge facilities.
Does anyone have any advice to help with losing weight again and recipes or things I should eat to help - ie good pulses and beans or spices to try instead. I now have a fridge, bt I have a very tight budget so any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks guys :-)

I would think Mexico would have awesome fresh produce......since a lot of ours here in the U.S. comes from Mexico...but you may have to look around for local farmers.0

I have been living in juchitepec, near the borders of Morelo, Guerrero and el estado be Mexico for a while now. It's at high elevation so I was slow to get started running, but that works OK now. Every afternoon, the mothers (and I) in Juchi go to the Tyangi to pick up fresh vegies. It's a wonderland of food not availabe anywhere in the U.S., not even in the weekly farmer's markets, and it's fresh from the adjoining campo. Can't imagine a healthier diet and I lose weight easily. Just one or two tortillas per meal though cuz they can be an issue, and folks here eat 5 or more with every meal and many are sobrepeso as a result.
Where have you been living?0 -
I didn't even reply to our question . . sorry . . . I usually throw chicken into a frying pan with the local veggies. Yum. I'm getiing hungry. I don't use spcies because i don't know how to cook Meal cost is usually a dollar or less.0

I used to live in Mexico and I did gain quite a bit of weight despite somewhat watching portions and running almost daily. Actually I should have watched portions more now that I say that...... so that would be my advice to you! You really can't avoid the tortilla and bread etc there... it's in pretty much every dish plus some. I would say stay active and watch portions... if they're small tortillas just have three max (that means no other grain carb though) and try to eat chicken instead of some of the fattier means (i.e. what they put in tacos lol).
I did know I would gain weight there so I accepted that and vowed I would try a little of everything. I do not regret I did that. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and I say take it! Do the best you can and when you get back to wherever you normally live your lifestyle will go back to normal.
Try to add as many veggies as possible! Fruit is so good there too but do keep portions in mind because of the sugar content.
If you're eating out try to ask for certain things on the side. Chilakiles and enchiladas are topped with a massive amount of cream and/or cheese that is often unnecessary.
Enjoy the rest of your time there! I love Mexico0 -
I lived in Tampico, Mexico. Not sure where you are, but there was plenty of fish and seafood there. Try to avoid the cheese and tortillas. Stick with trompo meat. I also found the fruit and veggie stands on the corners to be safe.
Have fun!0 -
Currently living in Cozumel - an island off Playa del Carmen - I'm a divemaster here, so diving 2 times a day in strong currents for an hour at a time plus walk a couple of miles a day. Before this I was living on a very basic diet of rice and potatoes and had a bad spat of ill health so think that didn't really help much.
definitely going to try and up my fish intake and try and eat more veggies and pulses and leave the rice and potatoes out for a while!
I'm also wheat and dairy intolerant so fortunately that rules out me eating cheese and tortillas ;-)0 -
