What do you do with extra calories?

Hi friends,
I have found myself on bed rest and only able to eat about 1200 calories out of my 1550 allotted. The end of the week for me comes on Saturday. Should I eat the extra calories (or am I already eating too many for bed-rest?).

What do you do at the end of the week with extra calories?

If you have some extra calories and hungry, then you can eat a little more (high protein ones are better like I mentioned in your other thread).

I would imagine the calorie target of 1550 is built on the assumption that you do some sort of normal daily activity over and above lying in bed - - walking around, making a pot of coffee, etc. If you're *just* lying in bed, you are burning less energy and don't need to consume as much; so if you're not hungry, don't eat. If you're on bed rest from something that you need to heal up from, however, make sure you get enough nutrition so that your body can fix itself :-)

    I'm saving mine for Christmas.

For now, you're probably fine at 1200 if you are lying in bed and don't feel like eating.

    Here's the thing.

If you only eat 1200 and do anything active during the day (walking, running errands, running, a class at the gym) you are not fueling your machine properly.

you did not become overweight by NOT EATING ENOUGH.

Feed that machine with yogurt, fruit, nuts, oatmeal, healthy whole grains. You can visit www.dailygarnish.com for some healthy meal ideas! (parcel 'em out into snack portions).

    Feed your machine!

whoops, missed that you are on bed rest.

Still 1200 does not seem like enough.

It's short term- I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you don't want them, don't eat them.

However, don't intentionally skimp calories if you're healing from something...healing generally means rebuilding tissue, fighting infection, whatever- all of which needs fuel. You aren't doing yourself any favors if you're intentionally skimping just because your activity is low while you're healing.

    It's like extra wine - a myth.
  • Thank you for the responses, so far. As of now I have over 800 calories left from earlier days this week. I am getting a little hungrier than I have been in the last two days. I am not sure if I should eat some of the calories back from 3 days ago or leave them. I want to respect my body and its hunger and fullness, but I also don't just want to eat because I am on bedrest for a week or so.

Actually it's not. If I did not eat up my EXTRA at day's end I'd be fueling my healthy 35 year old body with only 750 calories.

If it's a myth go join another program.

I have extra calories today, I'm going to have ice cream or chocolate or both. I already ate a pound of yoghurt (quark). My dinner was 1500 plus calories.

So I eat them. Grow up strong.

    Oh, and I'm still losing.

Your body is on a 24 hour clock.

That's from one of my doctors. You can't give and take from other days.

Yeah, meaning you are always using fuel, not that your calories reset every 24 hrs. Of course you can rollover calories* if you want to. There is absolutely zero truth to your body somehow resetting every 24-hrs.

*within limits. Balancing your calories out over a week is fine.

If a doctor put you on bed rest or gave you the 1550 a day goal then talk to him. We don't know the specifics of your situation.

If your just following the the MFP plan then don't worry if you don't hit your goal during this period of decreased activity. Do not eat back your calories from previous days.

I don't know why you're on bedrest (and it's not my business), but I recently had surgery and found that I had the opposite of extra calories while things were "actively" healing (the incisions and such). I seriously ate all the food-all of it. Please feed yourself if you're hungry and healing. If you're healing from something, feed yourself if you're hungry. Your body may need more fuel to heal than you think. So the idea of extra calories is foreign to me in general, please focus on getting well-not whether you are over/under calories for a week.

Thank you for your input. I am on bedrest for nose surgery (my sinuses were all reconstructed) and my deviated septum as well. I am on a steroid and have also been constipated due to the fact of the anesthesia. My body is just all out of whack right now. Thanks for your input.

Eat if you are hungry. If you are recovering then definitely eat.

I have about 1100 I'll be rolling over from my missing lunch today and my workout yesterday. I carry forward both overages and shortages all the time..still losing. Your body doesn't automatically stop using calories just because the clock changes so if you eat less one day then you can easily eat more on another ;)
