"The wriggly beetle larvae known as mealworms could one day dominate supermarket shelves as a more sustainable alternative to chicken, beef, pork and milk, researchers in the Netherlands say."

I will never be this much of an environmentalist. Or advocate for feeding the starving children. Or this much of an advocate for the humane treatment of animals, or ever hungry enough to eat this. No. Nuh uh, no way, forget it. I have my compassion limits. I don't care if that makes me a bad person. I'm just not going to stomach even the idea.

If we run out of resources and I still have to get my protein in my diet, I'll eat humans if I have to.0

That actually grosses me out less than the thought of eating worms. But I think I'd choose a nice death by starvation instead of either one. You are welcome to my remains, but I suspect I'll be high in cholesterol and preservatives.0 -
LOL- my brother says, if sauteed in butter, they taste/texture up like popcorn.0

LOL. You say that now. We'll see if you're ever starving if you stick to that plan.
Do you have a pet? A dog maybe? If it were just the two of you in the desert, that dog wouldn't hesitate to eat you if it was starving. Food for thought. (Pun intended.)0 -
eh, i'd eat it0

Oh the dog would be mutt kebob without me thinking twice about it, no doubt. But worms? I would seriously, seriously have to think long and hard about how bad I wanted to go on living. I'm grossed out enough by the fact that a certain amount of insect bits are permitted in our food as it is.
I vote we spend our scientists' valuable time figuring out how to make us all solar powered instead.0 -

I still give kudos to the first person who decided to eat a raw oyster.0

Daniella Martin has recipes at her blog Girl Meets Bug:

I admit I have not yet tried the stuff, but I can see myself taking baby steps -- like trying something made with mealworm flour.0 -

Hush! I want the scientists to focus on getting us solar powered, not snot powered. Don't give them anymore bad ideas, the idiots clearly have plenty already! :laugh:0

Yeah, I was the kid who would sit for hours at the dinner table waiting out my mother if I didn't want to eat the yuck meal she gave me. She never won.. and I never ate something I didn't like. I'd starve first.0

I was the same way. To this day she thinks I was skinny as a child because she fed me right. Actually, I was a hungry little Houdini. And my canine accomplices were fat instead.0 -

It's probably for the best that it didn't.0 -

Are you still sensitive about that?? I said I was sorry!!0 -
I'm eating mealworms for breakfast, and I'm a huge fan of both this and crickets. It's a food I've been looking for - crunchy and high protein, like a snack, something to replace potato chips.
Kale chips fit the bill but they're tough/time-consuming to make compared to bugs.
Bugs are too expensive right now though, they'd need to be mass-produced to be a viable food option (i.e., more demand!0 -

Never tried mealworms, but I ate crickets in Thailand and they were delicious! :-)0

Ground up and spiced properly and made into a patty I highly doubt any of you would be able to tell the difference.0
