Good fat, bad fat...

Hello -
I am wondering how much I should be concerned about going over in my fat calories...I'm under my overall calorie goal and I'm exercising, but I seem to go over in the fat calorie category often. I'm eating "good" fats like pure olive oil and coconut oil, and some sunflower (unsalted) seeds on salads, so how concerned should I be?

Will I still lose weight?

I'd appreciate any input!

Susan

I have always heard fats should make up 20-30% of your diet. So I would not worry about it!

It's not a problem if your within your calorie goals. Better the fat displaces carbs rather than protein though, imo.

I don't like how MFP sets default macros. I try for at least 100 grams of protein a day, ideally about 30% of my calories but I have trouble hitting that mark on high activity days. I try to keep carbs below 45% a day, and the rest winds up being fat. It's been working pretty well so far. I try to avoid butter and not go crazy on cheese- your sources of fat sound just right. We've been brainwashed about fat, I'm convinced it helps keep me full and energized on fewer calories.

The default macros are not ideal for everyone, but if you are over in fat (the highest in calories per gram) and under in calories, I wonder where else you are skimping - your body needs a balance of all the food groups to ensure you get the full range of nutrients. Are you taking in a little protein at every meal and snack to help preserve muscle mass and your metabolism? Consider switching the sunflower seeds to pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds are high in omega-6 which westerners eat too much of and is pro inflammatory. Are you having oily fish regularly?

MFP is not accurate. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are hugely under on your other macros because of it. And yes you will still lose weight if you are not going over calories. All the best :)
  • You will lose weight provided that you are in a calorie deficit. Unless going over your fats cause you to go over your calories and/or not get sufficient amounts of proteins (and carbs), it's not a problem.
