This is not normal constipation. It is being caused by the pain killers you are taking. Your doctor should have warned you and given you some ways to manage this. I would be afraid at this point that you might actually have an obstruction. I had this happen after taking pain meds for a kidney stone. My doc gave me a bottle of something to drink and that stuff was like white lightning! Bottom line, call your doc! They need to know.0

Sorry you're having trouble. I really think you should contact your doctor for advice, especially since you've recently had surgery. Good luck and feel better soon.
This is the path for sure. Get professional help. Impacted feces can lead to serious complications. Wishing you the best!
ps: too much fiber can exacerbate the problem (in the healthcare industry)0 -
If you are not in pain, call your doctor in the morning. If you are in pain, go to the emergency room.0

:flowerforyou: dump all the eating & drinking advice! call your dr. or if after hours call the dr. on call but do not wait. this could be very serious since it has been sooo long. the dr. can call in a prescription (example-enulose) etc. but please do not wait. I was on pain meds after my car accident an I know how it feels!0

Thank you for the responses-- I am currently on codeine for my pain. I guess I just have to deal! Bummer
I am a nurse and 6 days is way to long, up to 3 days is normal after that you have to do something and after a surgery (you never
said where you had surgery) this is something a Doctor must look into!
You do not just have to deal with it!!! GO AND SEE A DOCTOR ASAP!!!!
Worst case scenario: You can die from constipation! And yes I have seen this happen!!!0 -
Hi friends,
I know this is not a fun topic to bring up, well, for most of us! But I have been constipated since last Saturday. Literally 6 days- I have not had a tiny BM- not even a little. I am talking NOTHING.
I had surgery recently and went under anesthesia which can cause some constipation, however, I am already irregular as it is. I am not sure what to do.
I would prefer something subtle considering I am feeling pretty awful from surgery.
Thanks!
Speak to your doctor or a pharmacist urgently, given you have recently had surgery, we don't know what medication you are on nor what health issues you have it is not safe to get advice on what medical products to take from unqualified people on a forum.
In general your diary is locked so we can't see what you are missing if anything. Eat more fibre, don't eat any white/ refined grains, eat more water rich foods like fruits and vegetables, limit salt and MSG, ensure you are eating enough healthy fats.0 -
Prunes are your friend!
I second this.
Also dried figs and dried apricots. Eat first then drink a glass of warm water or milk and see what happens.0 -
I have the same problem but not to the extent that you have at all. Before I started my healthy life style, I like to call my diet that, my normal was several times a day. Now I'm lucky to have 3 a week. I drink way more water than I ever have before, I love apples, fresh veggies, whole grain breads. So I decided to go with Colace to see how that would work. I worked myself up to 4 Colace a day and I now have a BM every two days and even that isn't comfortable. it's a mystery
When people eat a poor diet they may go to the bathroom several times a day because their body is desperately trying to eliminate the rubbish they are consuming. Looking at your food diary I don't consistently see as much fibre rich food as you suggest, you can set MFP to start tracking it. You should be having nine servings of fruits and veggies a day PLUS other fibre rich foods (nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, wholegrains) at each meal and snack. You don't consistently hit five servings and not the full rainbow of colours including fibrous dark green veggies.
You are also undereating on calories some days and sheer bulk of food on others, part of what makes you 'go' is the bulk of food pushing it all through, and some of your carbs are likely refined/ low fibre (mash, biscuits, muffins, pretzels). Lastly you are skipping breakfast - the bowel is most active in the morning so this is the time to eat bulky foods and stimulate your gut.0
