brew the coffee tonight and drink it iced in the morning. I don't know about all protein powders, but I know Shakeology isn't supposed to be heated.

Thanks! Great idea. Not sure I can handle it iced given the cold mornings we get where I am, but will try that in the summer :)

I only just started using protein powder - Genisoy? It's mostly whey, I think.

The shakes I'm making are great for energy & recovery (bananas, greek yogurt, berries), but need a bit of rejigging for calories. Will try with plain water and see what happens!

There won't be any problem with it's effectiveness, but it may denature/turn in to a clumpy disgusting mess if you put it directly in the hot coffee. It doesn't taste so hot when that happens either.

Your best bet would be to mix the protein with a bit of milk or water beforehand to fully dissolve it, then pour that in your coffee (which hopefully isn't boiling hot).

Genisoy is Soy, not whey. Whey is a component of milk (dairy). Is there are dietary reason you're using Soy protein. Soy is controversial and you could get twice the amount of protein for that same calorie count from other protein powders.

In my personal experience, I used protein powder for a while as I bettered my diet but ultimately realized I didn't need it.

Heating up the protein will denature it (though that happens in your stomach anyway). The amino acids will remain intact during heating. However, I'd personally just avoid heating it for 100% effectiveness, peace of mind, etc.

Ha, makes sense, ok. Good to know, thank you. Impulse buy, it was the only powder in the grocery store. My diet offers a good amount of protein as is, but I wanted to nudge it up a bit.

Had thought about trying shakes for a while but couldn't face the 5+ hours of research required to settle on an actual opinion. Next time, will try to inform myself. The one glimmer of reasoning that clinched it was I remembered reading about digestion issues with a lot of proteins - I have a sensitive stomach - and for some reason thought this might be better.

Any suggestions on particular whey protein brands?

About soy, I only know that it is controversial, but haven't explored it further. Guess I should!

I think I'll take the risk and try this until I finish off the container, thank you. It's cheap but I'm loathe to throw it out!

edit: actually, wow, the soy stuff is really not feeling comfortable at all :(

But will try the 'on the side' trick with a whey protein, maybe :)
