Fix My Eating Before Exercising Properly Again?

So, over the last few months I've been feeling pretty down (more than down, and more than 'pretty'), and over the last few weeks it has gotten way worse. I have no motivation or energy at all - this extends to food. I cannot be bothered to eat, to prepare meals, to do anything.

I'm eating less than 1200kcal and even that is a push. On the off chance I do consume more it's when I've had alcohol or just picked at the bad food lying around my fiances flat (i.e. not wanting dinner but then having popcorn or fizzy sweets after).

I am going to the doctors, because I need to about this issue (not the food, the 'down') and hoping that anything they suggest/prescribe will help me feel better and want to eat.

Until this time I've been purposely putting off exercise because I know I won't be over 1200kcal before the exercise, so my net will be lower than 1000kcal with exercise.

I'm hoping come the new year, once I'm (hopefully) eating, I'll get back into exercise as a result and have my kettlebells also.

However, part of me is unsure as to whether I should just stop the exercise until I get my eating into a normal level, or whether I should just exercise straight through, regardless of calories and eating in general.

Any thoughts?

I'm no doctor, but maybe doing some light exercise (swimming, walking, taking a class) would help lift your mood a bit? especially if it's outside or with someone else---you know, endorphins and all. Good luck to you.

I would meet with the DR about your food, maybe see a dietician? You need to eat, and healthy stuff too.

And light yoga (the relaxing kind, not the burn kind) only burns about 75 calories per half hour and helps keep me sane(er) :smokin:

Exercise is medicine! Try light exercise and see if it makes you feel better. If you feel dizzy, stop.

I have been exercising on and off, but it does nothing. I just exercise, the mood stays the same, I don't get hungry and I don't enjoy it anymore.

    hmm...sounds like a trip to the doctor is in order (I peeked at your profile) and they will come up with the best plan? Stick with your appointment and see what they have to say (and we can't live on wine alone) :drinker: (which is kind of a letdown) {sarcasm}

The first thing to do is get diagnosed and treated, there is no point in making decisions when you are experiencing low mood and are malnourished. If you have clinical depression or seasonal affective disorders physical activity is highly beneficial, particularly if you exercise in the daylight (even on a cloudy winters day, look up not down), in a group, to music or with choreography, intensively and consistently. Even getting your 10000 steps outdoors is worthwhile.

However your body won't be able to produce the brain hormones that control mood without nutrients - protein, omega-3s from oily fish, various vitamins and minerals from fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, carbs from wholegrains or beans and lentils. Looking at your diary it's not just how much you are eating but what - ready made/ processed/ nutritionally devoid rubbish instead of wholefoods - buy granary bread not white, nuts and seeds not crisps, dried fruit not biscuits, dark chocolate not milk, carton vegetable soup or canned baked beans, canned oily fish. If the rubbish is not in the house everyone will be eating healthier - aim to meet all our government's recommendations for healthy eating.

If there's a permenant grey cloud over your head and you're not eating enough, and exercise does nothing for you mood... that strikes me as a nutritional deficiency being involved. You need fats in your diet for hormone regulation and if any of your vitamin or mineral levels are out of whack, that could be affecting your mood as well.

I live at home, and my parents buy all the shopping. I have no say as to what is purchased, and no money to buy my own supply of shopping for me and my son.

i would exercise for 2 reasons 1-because it will give you endorphines and hopefully help to get you out of this "funk"
2- i dont know about anyone else but i am always hungrier through out the day after my work outs.

by all means dont go weight lifting and doing crossfit type workouts but some light cardio might do you some good.

Eating is so important in this journey as backwards as that sounds.

    good luck :)
