girls leg press

My boyfriend worked out with me yesterday and his leg press one time Max was 160. I really made him look bad when I lifted that with one leg, wasn't easy though
is that normal for girls to leg press more than guys?

he would probably say that after the fact. He did tell me not to tell anyone he knows though

Someone untrained should really be able to leg press 1.5x their body weight pretty easily.

I hope you don't hand him a shopping bag to carry around at the mall - the added weight may make him fall over!

Seriously, he probably was either playing with you, or he needs to hit the gym a little more.

As for guys vs. girls - there's really not much difference in structure for the leg press, so it's all a matter of how much muscle you've got and how well it's conditioned to lift.

This doesn't make sense, does he weigh a lot less than 160? If not then he should have no problem doing it, and he was messing around with you.

he doesn't lift and he's very little. He maybe weighs 120. He's not known for his strength. Lol

wellberts dog can press 160. My grandma could fart at the machine and that thing can go flying.

women tend to have stronger lower bodies than men unless that man has been doing strength training

In general, women have stronger quads than men.

However 160 is pretty easy. I was EASILY doing that in rehab one week after total knee replacement.

    I leg press 460

Since he only weighs 120 it might not be too far off... Most guys tend to focus on upper body..

    I did 340 one time

his arms are a little stronger
  • That's exactly what I maxed out at the other day for the first time 160. This is my first time doing any weight training so I'm hoping to change that

I leg press more than my brother. He's competitive and kicks my *kitten* at chin ups so I know he isn't pretending. He is thin though for a male.

if you don't mind me asking do you know what your thigh measures, I measured my boyfriends and his are 21" with muscle and that is a few inches larger than mine, but yet I'm stronger.

17.25" at largest part, I'm 6'1" though so they look really small for my height. My calves are only 11.5"
  • Wow, that is small, my thigh is 17.75" and very small.

If he weighs 120lbs, a 160 one rep max is probably about normal given any lack of previous training.

But it is true, a lot of guys, for some reason, decide to forego lower body training altogether, or make a severe lack of it. I've seen many Atlas dudes at the gym who get on the leg press and have trouble doing anything near what they bench press.. I guess I am the opposite anomaly, with my bench 1RM only being about 1.4x body weight and leg press using 4.3x body weight as 12RM.. >_>

A generality is that men tend toward having stronger upper bodies than women. Women tend toward having stronger lower bodies than men. This is quite common.

Women do have stronger lower bodies typically... my leg press usually starts at 225 as a warm-up.. my max Ive been able to do a full of is around 470

Oh I am newish to weightlifting and have never tried for one Rep Max on leg press...do you work up to it similar to bench press? I have not done it in awhile but I can do 10 reps of 270 pounds which is twice my body weight

I think its similar to that, you just have to lift different weights until you find it. After that its easier because you can only go up from there. Working out with 270 is good I think, I do 10 reps of 170 now and 3 sets

As people have said already, women typically have strong quads and extremely weak hamstrings. It's possible he wasn't playing around but I doubt it. I'm about even with my partner for leg press, my max is about 770lbs but when it comes to squats I can only squat about 210lbs whereas he can squat almost 400lbs. Depends on the exercise i guess :)

I think your number sounds normal and his sounds low.

I also think it's a bad idea for untrained new weight lifters to be testing one-rep maxes. You're going to hurt yourself doing that. If a weight feels like it needs your maximum effort to lift, it's too heavy. Stick to something you can comfortably lift a couple times minimum, and adjust incrementally to hit whatever rep range you're aiming for (5 reps, 6-8, 8-12, whatever....just not 1 or close to it.)
  • The other day I leg pressed a ton more than my boyfriend. Girls seem to have more muscle in their legs than guys. 160 is pretty low

Been using the leg press for several months. I regularly press over 200#. Wanting to say that before I hurt my leg 10 days ago, I hit a PR of 238# ( the unloaded bar is 118#)

ETA: this is the leg press I use http://www.lifefitness.com/commercial/hammerstrength/plateloaded/lowerbodytorso/linearlegpress.html
