I'd like to buy a barbell set for my home gym. Any good brands out there that are easy to change plates?

Is a one piece bar better than a two piece one? The vinyl barbell set I bought a while back only goes up to 21 lbs but at least it doesn't mark up my floor.

I appreciate your suggestions!

    Hmmm.

    What's your budget?

How do you feel about olympic barbells? $300 buys you a nice olympic bar of good quality. (No plates)

Haven't really set a price limit but I wouldn't want to buy too much weight to start as I'm uncertain how much I'll need in the future.

And for those just starting out, for $219 apparently you can get an entry level bar and 300 lbs of plates

If you're patient, often on craigslist you can find a whole setup of power rack, bar plates, and bench for a deep discount over new. I've seen complete sets for as low as $300 sometimes.

i'm a beginning lifter. I need 125-140 right now for squats and deadlifts. I assume I'll need more. depends on if you are serious about lifting.

Even bodypump bars and weights can go way over 20lbs. Easily can do 50-60 lbs on those and they're vinyl, I think.

A standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 lbs. A women's olympic bar weighs around 35 lbs. There's always standard weight sets which are a 1" diameter bar. They weigh 15-20lbs and can't handle nearly the weight an olympic bar can.

Regardless of what route you go don't cheap out on a bar.

Bumping - probably need a lighter set than going the Olympic Weight Lifting route!

just get an olympic barbell set. most people can squat/bench/deadlift a bar within the first couple weeks of learning the lifts.

depending on your budget, you could get a cheap bar + plates from a sporting goods store for around 200 bucks.
I started with a set from ****'s Sporting Goods. The bars can't handle much dropping, but work fine for getting started.

If you have the extra money, I'd reccommend picking up a solid texas power bar.

Especially shortly after the New Year. Some people spend a ton of money on their resolutions and give up a couple of months in. Also check out your local used sports store (Play It Again Sports is what they're called around here).

I got all my stuff used. Craigslist and Play it Again Sports. I have about $275 total in my setup so far and that's an olympic bar and weights totalling 320 pounds and an adjustable bench and rack. When I make room in my garage I'd like to eventually get a power rack.

I got most of my standard set at flea markets & yard sales, got the squat rack on Craig's list. I think the standard barbell bits are easier to find that the Olympic sized ones
