it must be that time of year when newly energized dieters start their new year's resolutions because articles like this one show up conveniently a couple of days before new years... you know what they say about a fool and their money, right?
why can't the media just stick to basic facts? why do they have to push the latest "author gets rich quick" scheme on new dieters? calories in vs. calories out. eat breakfast. don't eat breakfast. doesn't matter. monitor ALL of your daily calories and you'll lose weight. is that really so difficult to write up in an online article?
In fact, more and more research is proving that not avoiding calories in the morning is the way to stay not only slim, but also strong in both body and mind. In fact, this strategy can completely erase the damage of an otherwise "bad" diet.

"There are a lot of forces in our society pushing against" skipping breakfast, says Mark Mattson, PhD, chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging. "Those forces are driven by money. They include the food industry obviously, and in some respects the pharmaceutical industry.” Breakfast cereals alone are an $11 billion a year industry, and that's before you get into eggs and bacon, bagels and lox, pancakes and syrup.

If you're truly hungry, eat. Something healthy. In moderation. No matter what time of the day or night. What's healthy and what isn't seems to change daily. And, we're all different. Just do what works and forget the fads.0

I skipped breakfast for many years and gained weight. I grew to love breakfast, still gained weight. Now I always eat breakfast and I'm losing, but I'm not skipping other meals either. It would be pretty tough to make it the largest meal of the day.0

The whole "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day," mantra was just a brilliant marketing scheme that has been accepted by many as scientific truth. Any time you have an assertion made, it generally pays to follow the money. Eat when you're hungry, eat nutritious food, and stop when you're full. Simple as that. That will be $25.0

meh.. whatever. I was convinced for years that simply breathing made me fatter... now I do less eating and more exercising and keep tabs on things... HEY! Things are going in the right direction.

Whatever, eat breakfast if you want, skip it if you want. Same as any other meal. Nothing is written in stone with diets. You do it your way I'll do it mine. Some days I don't have my first meal of the day till after 12:00pm and some days it's after 1 or 2 when I eat. But I've been known to eat at 8:00am too. I've also been known to not eat dinner, why? because I'm not hungry. I eat when I'm hungry and time of day makes no difference to me.0

I will say that I have never had an appetite for breakfast. For me the most important thing I consume in the morning is water. I wake up and chug 20-30 ounces, wait to pee, and then go do cardio. Fresh fruit also works as it's hydrating too.
I think that if you wake up hungry you probably didn't nourish yourself the day before. I firmly believe that after a long night's sleep, our body's first requirement should be water. I think this activates enzymes in the body and makes us feel energized, plus it negates hunger (I don't feel hungry in the morning so I wouldn't know; you should probably just eat if you're hungry though, not sidestep it with water).
And the reward for all of this has been lean gainzzzzzz since elementary school!0 -

I started doing intermittent fasting on a 16/8 eating window which means I stop eating at 9 pm and fast until 1pm the next day.
RESULTS: I find that I can control calories better.
It's no magic pill for me, but I see value in it for food intake control.
What troubles me are these drones running out to buy the latest, greatest fad diet that comes down the pike.

Different strokes for different folks. 5 people in my family. I ate breakfast everyday and I was obese. My husband doesn't and he was also obese. My oldest 2 daughters don't eat it and one is VERY thin and one is very fit/strong athletic. The youngest also doesn't eat it and she is very overweight. I have since stopped eating it (not because of this article, but because I practice almost daily 19-22 hour fasts which help keep life easier) and it's helped me lose the last 30+ lbs of my 70+ loss. My husband still doesn't eat it and he's also lost 50 lbs. just by cutting out/down the amount of fast food. Breakfast eating or not eating isn't the only answer, it is just one of the million options.0

I thought the same way. I swear I gained a pound whenever I smelled a pastry. Nah, it was eating the pastry that did it. I'm following the same "diet" you're on and ......Wow, it worked!

I agree if you like to eat breakfast eat it if you don't like it don't eat it. Just keep track of all your daily calories no matter what time you eat them. I start the day eating around 11 am - noon which is "lunch time" for some people0

I work from 3:30 to midnight. I usually go to bed at about 3am and get up at about 10am. I don't even have a concept of which meals are breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks. I just eat under my calories and voila!0

God damn that food industry! Always trying to shove stuff down our throats. Ever since the agricultural revolution, we've been SLAVES to farmers and ranchers!

The more calories consumed in relation to those expended is what causes weight gain without regard to when they are consumed. Honestly, I think the main thing is that if you are active in the morning, fuel your body for the activity. If not, whenever you eat should make sense for you. There are volumes of research that will argue both points... Research can "prove" anything you want it to so be wary. In my case, I started eating protein and fiber in the morning. I don't have time in the morning to eat a full breakfast so I usually do the protein bar and fiber bar thing... It provides energy for morning activities (enough for what I have to do)... Then as the day progresses, I have a chance to eat whole foods... Seems to work for me. i have not had a lot of problems losing weight or gaining strength doing it that way so I guess I'll keep doing it for now.0

I rarely eat after dinner (and I eat early, usually around 6:00-6:30), so I wake up pretty hungry. I would not be functional if I didn't eat breakfast.0

I eat 5 or 6 small meals a day starting with something about an hour after I get up it keeps me from getting too hungry and grabbing the wrong food. Do what works for you it is about eating less calories then you use. Getting healthy in 2013, eating right and staying active.0
