If you have an Academy in your area, try them. That's where I get mines from. I've found them to be cheaper than Walmart.

I have found that most places charge about $1/pound.

We found a really nice stack set (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 lbs.) for a good price at Dunham's Sporting Goods, but we quickly outgrew them.

One idea is to buy plates and dumbbell handles...

You may also want to tell your family, friends, co-workers, kids teachers, etc. that you are looking for some. If I had done that. I would have had everything I needed for free.

I agree with looking on CL. Also expect to pay about a $1/lb for new ones!

Wal-Mart is generally good for dumbbells up to 35lbs, I've seen 40lb dumbbells there but they seem pretty rare.

However, if you can buy them used, do so, because you'll save a lot of money on something that usually the worst effect of being in a used condition is generally chipped paint or cracked rubber.
