Great idea for New Years (Not really a resolution)

So this worked for me in 2011. I promised to myself that I would use my new x-country skis. Turned out to be a record breaking snow year. I lost 20 lbs during 2011 and by the time I got to my fall vacation (lots of hiking in Iceland, September 2011) I was below my goal weight.
In 2012 we got NO SNOW. So the ground froze and my well froze. That was not fun. I sat inside and drank and ate a lot. I started traveling again for work (2x/year is my busy travel time) in March 2012 and I gained back the 20 I lost.
It was sad.
I stopped weighing in.
I stopped being honest about logging.
I'm no longer a size 8.
In fact, I got new pants in a 10 from my husband (and he never buys my clothes so this is a big deal) and the 10s are too tight.
Clothes have always been a motivation for me. I HATE New Years resolutions. I hate the folks that join a gym and take parking spots only to keep paying and stop coming come March. They are annoying and many wear perfume to the gym (gak!) so it's clear they are there to pick up dates and not actually workout. (not all, but most).
So, kicking off 2013 I will tell myself the same thing I told myself in 2011. Not "I'm gonna lose weight". Not "I'm going to lose 20 lbs and fit into the sexy pants." But rather:
"I'm going to ski" (it's 800 calories per hour and works every muscle).
What about you? Sexy pants? Perfume at a new gym to impress the gents? Ski? Yoga? What are you promising to do in 2013. Where I live we get snow November - March so 5-6 months/year.

One of my promises to myself is to eat less artery clogging food. I'm not going to eat clean specifically, but maybe I don't need the cheeseburger AND the cheese fries. And also to eat a lot less refined sugar (one serving a day or less), because my body doesn't need to develop insulin resistance. Looking at relatives, it would appear it's a-comin' for me.0

In 2013 i will
Run more days than not.
Look after my legs by stretching lots and doing yoga after runs.
Lift twice a week.0 -
Since 2010 was my year of loss 2011 was the yo-yo year of 'OH NO" where I gained...so 2012 was my "take control" year. Since so much of my life was out of my control I took control over the ONLY thing I could and that was what I was eating and some exercise. For 2013 I will continue to be in control...I lost it in 2012 and I am going to control the exercise not letting circumstances determine if or when I exercise....I will do it...I will add weights...I will firm it up...and add to that I will continue to eat better.
For me it's all about what I have control over...and unfortunately it's not much.
I will continue to watch for your cross country skiing....even though I live in Colorado I'm not a skier:blushing:

I'm in much the same boat as you. I didn't tell myself to lose any weight last year, nor the year before- and I won't be this year. Rather, one of my resolutions this year is to be fully utilizing my new pull up bar by the end of the year. I figure if I can use that properly this time next year, plus follow up with my other resolutions (mostly running based), I will lose a bit of weight as we go- or if I don't I'll be a heck of a lot fitter this time next year and that will do me nicely.
Best of luck with the skiing! Glitter me rather jealous, because I'd love to learn how to ski myself.0 -
2012 has been great for me. 2013 will include even more exercise and better foods. Going to bicycle more, do more organized rides.0

Hmmmmm. Decisions, decisions ... wear perfume to the Y to impress the (other) guys, or not?
I think maybe not. I bet it wouldn't work very well for me anyway. I'll keep starting my day at the Y, but I'll specialize in that "Eau de Sweat" smell, just as I've been doing. And I'll keep trying to suppress flatulence, especially while doing "abs." I've sometimes found that challenging!
Seriously, though: good post! I hope I can remember it when warm weather returns. Life changes have generally been a summer phenomenon for me. Don't have a clue why that should be, but that's how it's been for me.0 -
I'm going to finally get around to trying RevAbs and I'm going to change up my workouts every month!!!0

I love your attitude on this!
I am trying to figure out my goals for the new year, not necessarily resolutions.
So far I have: Run more.
And be happy again. :blushing:0 -

Yeah, grass fed burger has way less fat than factory farmed! I think this is a great goal though. Thanks for sharing!0 -

Hi James, hope you are well.
When the weather warms I'll be out kayaking.0 -

oh there's no learning for x-country skiing. Just one foot at a time. It's not like downhill0 -

awww, I'm not a skier either, just cross country.0 -
I am going to make sure I eat more raw foods, remembering the reason....my husband and daughter's health. He has promised to eat what i cook and she kinda has to (she's 4). If i make this about them and not me, i'm hoping it will stick this time. We have also agreed to no eating out for the month of January (except my work holiday party).0

to ice skate and exercise more, gonna get a membership where i take my classes this weekend, scared but i know i can do it!0

I'm getting a heart rate monitor. I have not been honest and on top of my food log. The goal for 2013 (and it's starting now, not on the 1st) is to exercise 3-4 times per week and log my food. No more crazy diets. Straight up low fat and low cal and watching what I eat. I will eat like a normal person, be healthy and exercise.0

I do get annoyed at millions of people ( tens) taking up equipment at the gym and cramming into the changing rooms in the new year but as someone posted on my status earlier - maybe I could motivate them to keep it up after march?
I just intend to keep doing what I have been doing.
I can't deny myself things because that's not living - there's no point to living if I can't have chocolate! (Sorry that is so shallow)
I intend to keep going to the gym, watching what I eat so as not to pile weight back on and to have chocolate every day if I feel like it.

Quality chocolate is best. Check out a chocolate factory near you. Or check out one near me. TAZA sells theirs online and it's Mexican stone ground chocolate. No added crap.0 -

"normal" is underrated. I've always been a healthy eater. But, you can gain back the weight with healthy food. I've proven that.0 -

fantastic! speaking of raw: there's some great guides online about what is in season when.0 -
My overall goals are to find a new job/career that has a work/life balance and encourages me to grow personally and professionally (where I am now is the complete opposite).... and to start lifting weights!0
-
I am going to start running and walking and playing again! Enjoying life again....stop wasting away the minutes doing things that don't make me happy.0

I promise to myself that I will Run for 30 minutes twice a week and do Just Dance 4 for 1 hour everyday. I need this to help condition myself and my lungs for the military physical fitness test by doing cardio. Just Dance 4 has 4 or 5 different workouts that are extremely fun to do and they even calculate the approximate number of calories you burned based on your energy level. Even if its not necessarily doing what i think it is, its a fun way to get me up off the couch and moving! the running is so i can track how conditioned I am.0

work life balance is important to me too, that's why I loved your response.
I have a job that I get out at 4:30 every day, no questions asked. And 3:30 on Fridays in the summer. Not in my field but I've made a switch for the better.0 -
