Knee injury advice

I tore my meniscus while running a half marathon 8 months ago. I haven't been able to exercise since. I just completed physical therapy and am ready to start again...slowly. I still have knee pain. I'm looking for advice from anyone who might have recovered from this type of injury. I'm sad that running is really out for me right now and I feel like nothing I do (that doesn't hurt my knee) burns any real calories. Frustrated.

Because of my weight running was out for me anyway. I tore the meniscus in each knee at different times in my life. Each ended in arthroscopic surgery. The pain is not there but because of my age and arthritis now, I swim. I really love it. Always have. Maybe that is an option for you.

So many people have told me to swim. The problem is- I hate it. I mean really hate it. Maybe I should opt for the surgery so that I have a chance of running again? I was hoping to avoid the surgery and just be able to build up the strength in my knee again with time and easing back into exercise again. But, it's been a long time and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. How soon after your surgeries did you feel "back to normal" again?
