I only get ground turkey if it's on sale and cheaper than the lean beef. Or if I'm doing sausage. Turkey or chicken sausage is a lot lower in calories than pork sausage.

The ground turkey craze happened because the 'red meat is BADBADBADFORYOU!!' craze happened. And then there was that 'pork - the other white meat' campaign.

It's due to diet industry advertising/competition, imo.
  • I live in Australia and turkey just isn't very popular here at all. Thank god. I've tried minced turkey and it was extra lean or whatever and it was dirty as hell. I don't understand why people eat it unless they don't like other kinds of meat.
I own a processor so I make my own minces from the meat I buy, particularly chicken.

I buy the 99 percent lean ground turkey when it's on sale. We use a lot of ground turkey for meatloaf and greek turkey burgers. I also still use very lean ground beef and mix it with turkey when I make nachos or chili. I think it's a preference. But where I live the ground turkey is less cals and less fat in all instances. BUT - I do not have a Trader Joe's so I don't know about those.

Turkey has a lot of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps the brain make serotonin, thus releasing happy, calm feelings. (This is also why you can feel sleepy after a big turkey dinner- a lot of tryptophan= a lot of serotonin= zzzzz)

    Chicken has more.

I thought the comparison was turkey and beef, not turkey and chicken.

    Amen to that!
I'm Aussie also...and I had to google 'turkey bacon' just to see what is was and how it was made...:noway:

I'll stick with my chicken, beef, lamb and pork. Turkey is something I cook at Christmas with sage butter and onion, bacon and garlic stuffing.

I'm not much of a meat eater but I rarely eat cows (never pig). A little poultry or fish is about all the meat I can stand. Yes, I love turkey bacon.

Easy, because people hate their taste buds

I'm going to go with this as the reason. I can't stand ground turkey. I have never been able to make it palatable.

Beef, on the other hand, I have probably once every third day or so. Mmm, burgers and steaks.

turkey can be awesome if seasoned right, that and throw it into a food processor afterwards and grind it up and serve on rice. so good.

When I eat pork, I feel gross. But I love me some carnitas!!!

If you are good with culinary arts, you can make anything taste good… turkey is neutral enough to make delicious. Eat a shrimp, cooked with no butter or seasoning. Not to appetizing. Add a tiny bit of seasoning, and some butter, food of the gods!!
  • Right? Ground turkey is vile! I eat beef maybe 1x per month but would much rather eat it rarely than substitute turkey.

Dark turkey meat can be a better source of iron than beef.

I like both lean ground beef and lean ground turkey; they taste different. I didn't know there was a ground turkey craze.
