Eggs

Good morning. I just wanted to know what people think of eating 1 egg per day....
On most days I tend to boil an egg in the morning for breakfast or lunch. Not everyday but in a week I might end up eating an egg about 5 days....Is it bad? Is it good? What is your view on this?
Thanks

I went through a period of time where I did the same thing. Then I got a bit tired of it. However, I didn't find it to be a bad thing.0

I eat three hard boiled egg whites just about every day. No problems, no worries. :bigsmile:0

I'd be interested to know as well. I have been normally using egg beaters/egg whites for "eggy muffins" for breakfast, but this week, I've been eating all our easter eggs! The thought has crossed my mind that my cholesterol is going through the roof, but there is no sense in letting the eggs go to waste! :-)0

I eat eggs everyday, but I have egg whites, sometimes I boil them and eat them whole.0

i usually eat 2-3 egg whites a day. ITs good protein, no cholest and very low cal, plus the protein is awesome.
why are you worried about the eggs?0 -
Eggs are a good source of protein, one egg a day is good, and especially seeing as though you are boiling it..nothing wrong with one egg a day0

I eat 2-6 daily (yolk included) and have for some time. My cholesterol is stellar.0

Assuming the main concern is the cholesterol, here's what a Mayo Clinic cardiologist has to say: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol/HQ00608
Question
Eggs: Are they good or bad for my cholesterol?
Are chicken eggs good or bad for my cholesterol?
Answer
from Thomas Behrenbeck, M.D.
Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, and a diet high in cholesterol can contribute to high blood cholesterol levels. However, how much the cholesterol in your diet can increase your blood cholesterol varies from person to person.
When deciding whether to include eggs in your diet, consider the recommended daily limits on cholesterol in your food:
If you are healthy, it's recommended that you limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams (mg) a day.
If you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes or a high low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") blood cholesterol level, you should limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 200 mg a day.
One large egg has about 213 mg of cholesterol — all of which is found in the yolk. Therefore, if you eat an egg on a given day, it's important to limit other sources of cholesterol for the rest of that day. Consider substituting servings of vegetables for servings of meat, or avoid high-fat dairy products for that day.
If you like eggs but don't want the extra cholesterol, use only the egg whites. Egg whites contain no cholesterol. You may also use cholesterol-free egg substitutes, which are made with egg whites. If you want to reduce cholesterol in a recipe that calls for eggs, use two egg whites or 1/4 cup (59 milliliters) cholesterol-free egg substitute in place of one whole egg.
Edited for my own (non-medical professional opinion). I wouldn't forgo the yolks entirely. From other sources I've read, in eggs from free-range chickens (or fed enriched grains), the yolks are also a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins. Plus, they taste good and a bit of fat is satiating (for me at least).0 -

I eat one egg everyday and 2-3 egg whites. But if you have high cholesterol, is best to check with your doctor.0 -
And just to confuse the issue more, this study seems to contradict earlier recommendations with regards to cholesterol from eggs (http://www.physorg.com/news139156140.html ) so it seems like the professionals don't agree (but what's new?). But, from what I can tell, 1 egg a day shouldn't be much to worry about.
Two-egg diet cracks cholesterol issue
August 28, 2008
(PhysOrg.com) -- Research published in The European Journal of Nutrition this week has finally cracked the myths surrounding eggs and cholesterol. The new study showed that people who ate two eggs per day, while on a calorie-restricted diet, not only lost weight but also reduced their blood cholesterol levels.
The Big Cholesterol Myth - Recent Studies Confirm What This Doctor Has Been Saying for Years. - www.douglassreport.com/cholesterol
A research team from the University of Surrey headed by Dr Bruce Griffin fed two eggs per day to overweight but otherwise healthy volunteers for 12 weeks while they simultaneously followed a reduced calorie diet prescribed by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) – who normally restrict egg intake to 3-4 per week. A control group followed the same BHF diet but cut out eggs altogether.
Both groups lost between 3 to 4kg (7- 9lbs) in weight and saw a fall in the average level of blood cholesterol.
Research leader Dr Bruce Griffin stated: "When blood cholesterol was measured at both six weeks and twelve weeks, both groups showed either no change or a reduction, particularly in their LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, despite the egg group increasing their dietary cholesterol intake to around four times that of the control."
This research provides further evidence to support the now established scientific understanding that saturated fat in the diet (most often found in pastry, processed meats, biscuits and cakes) is more responsible for raising blood cholesterol than cholesterol-rich foods, such as eggs.
As a nation, we currently eat 28 million eggs a day; between two and three per person per week – one of the lowest intakes in the world. Neither the Food Standards Agency nor the British Dietetic Association places any recommendation on the number of eggs we should eat in a week but many health care professionals are still giving out-of-date advice to cut back on eggs.
Nutritionists are now calling for health care professionals to revise their recommendations to mirror the findings of the most recently published research.
Dr Griffin continued: "There is no convincing evidence to link an increased intake of dietary cholesterol or eggs with coronary heart disease through raised blood cholesterol. Indeed, eggs make a nutritional contribution to a healthy, calorie-restricted diet. We have shown that when two eggs a day are eaten by people who are actively losing weight on a calorie-restricted diet, blood cholesterol can still be reduced."

Hey, egg whites are good for you, that and poaches eggs are the best way to eat them. My aerobics teacher who has the all time best body ever eats about 14 egg whites a day, but only the white part and once a day she will eat the center. I wouldn't go and eat egg sandwich's or scrambled but I would eat one or two egg whites after a workout for great protein or in between meals. GOOD LUCK!0

I lost a lot of weight eating an average of 2 eggs (including the yolk) a day. At the same time my cholesteral and tryglycerides were cut almost in half. There is research that shows that eggs (yes, the whole thing) can actually help increase your good cholesteral.
Eggs are a great source of protein and of many other vitamins and minerals. They are cheap, easy to fix, easy to pack for lunches and snacks, and taste good.

This link is especially interesting in that it compares the nutritional value of egg whites vrs egg yolks

Thanks everyone. My cholesterol levels are ok....I think. I guess I'm just worried because of the 'old way of thinking'...too many eggs is a bad thing. BUT I do beleive that the protein in the egg keeps me going for much longer than any other breakfast or lunch. I normaly always boil the egg...sometimes with the 2nd egg white to go with it. Low calorie and very filling.
Thanks for the input everybody. Much appreciated
Hope everybody is having a great day!! :flowerforyou:0 -
I've always had 1 hard-boiled egg a day and my cholesterol level is fine.0

Eggs are a great source of protein. My opinion is that eggs are fine.0

I eat the entire egg and I have noticed when I eat eggs for breakfast I am fuller longer then if I just ate cereal. And with my dietary changes I bet I see my cholesterol has decreased when I get it checked again.0

eggs are a staple in my house... egg white omelets loaded with veggies! Mmm...!0

I eat 2 to 3 egg whites each morning. I buy eggs by the box (5 dozen eggs per box) and we buy eggs every 2 weeks. It's one of the best sources of protein that I know of and it's low calorie. I don't usually eat the yolk - but do occasionally. I honestly can't do a breakfast that doesn't include eggs... I just end up hungrier sooner.0

Eating too many egg YOLKS are not healthy, very high in cholesterol. Egg whites are good though, high protein, no fat, low calorie and low carb!
I eat around 5-6 egg whites a day, 5 times a week. hehehehe its yummy0
