Gym-goers: The Resolutioner Apocalypse is Nigh Upon Us!
I'm afraid it's already begun! They've come in droves! They're occupying our machines, wandering around our free weights and making it near impossible to accomplish what we do all the rest of the year! They're brainless but do so much evil!
There are SO many of them already; and I'm afraid it will only be worse in a week! They can be spotted doing hanging leg raises in our squat racks or lifting pretty little pink weights while on Bosu Balls or mindlessly chanting things about Acai berries or cleanses or HCG.
So do you plan to brave it? Or are you gonna board up & stay hunkered down to work out in your own homes? It should last about 3-4 weeks; I just read a report that says that 80% of gym going resolutioners give up after the first month! Kudos to the 20% but... Wow - pathetic!
I think I'm gonna try to brave it, but if you see my workouts start to consist of a hundred different kinds of curls and ab exercises... please come after me before it's too late!

Nope. I won't do it. I've got enough stuff to last me a few weeks at home. I'll go back in February.0

Well, here it goes.0

CAN'T wait to see what hell the gym has become on Wednesday... I already know who the regulars are who show up at 5am to the gym..0

The more the merrier. It's nice to see people working out and trying to improve themselves. Some actually keep going and reach their goals. We all were once "newbies".0

Everybody has to start somewhere. I refuse to get all p*ssy about it0

I was once a resolutionist myself !! I can still remember how nervous and excited I was to try and get healthy. It's just more people to remind me not to give up
It also reminds me that my favorite elliptical really isn't mine lol0 -

Oh I won't get p*ssy more like, oh, newbie, I better see you here in June!!!!0 -
How about instead of p*ssing and moaning about them, you give a newbie a hand-up to get to your level of awesomeness... A welcoming smile, a kind word could turn that resolutionist into a lifelong devotee.
It starts with you, dude.0 -
You know on the Discovery Channel, when allllllllllllllllllllllll the baby sea turtles come crawling on to the sand and waddling and flipping over each other to make it to safety.....? Well millions of baby noobs are rolling in about this time of year. It's best to get a good seat, occasionally flip one back right side up and basically just keep your fingers crossed that as many of them make it as possible.
This is no bad thing.0 -

Maybe if you weren't so special, you could help some of those "Resolutioners" out and they wouldn't have such a high failure rate. I hate all the bashing that goes on this time of year. With people like you, it's no wonder people have gym fear. Get the hell over yourself. You come off as a d!ck.

It took me many years resolutions to finally make it stick. And people judging me didn't help.0 -

You're awesome.
OP, don't be a douchecanoe.0 -
And this is why I don't do gyms, and why some people don't even bother trying. Congrats on yr ego.0

Unless you starting going to the gym right out of the womb, you too, were a noobie at one time.0

Four years ago I started lifting weights and it started on New Years Day...0

It is in my nature to try and assist someone that is doing an exercise incorrectly. It's annoying to see the influx of people in the gym, I think I may try to rescue at least one of them and see if I can hold them accountable.0

It's good to hear that some people stick it out but IMHO, it's the WORST time to start since the gyms are crowded and if you're gonna go the personal trainers route those trainers are overbooked and won't give you the kind of attention they would if they didn't have 10 other clients they were seeing that same day. Glad it worked out for you though.0 -

Anyway they usually stay far away from free weights........so I don't see the problem.0 -
The only reason Im reaching my goals is cause I started on Valentine's day and not New Year's day, apparently.
Good thing those of us that have been at it for a really long already are so awesome that:
1. We don't Need a gym
2. We dont Need an empty gym
3. We understand how awkward and uncomfortable they feel, so we can be there with our knowledge if they need us
4. most of us are hanging on dearly to the hope that some of our loved ones that are making resolutions today will be among those that reach success, cause we want them here with us for a long time.
5. We also know that most new gym members will be on cardio machines....0 -
I'd dig it if some cool new people joined my gym. I could use some new friends, and maybe I could help them with their weight lifting form.0

Ohhh good...one of THESE threads again...0

We were all newbies once...and I would have loved it if someone had encouraged me when I first started! In fact, since I'm still hit and miss (bad I know), I would STILL love to get some kind of encouragement from a regular at the gym.....Yes, I hate to walk into my gym and see it crowded, but that's just because I still consider myself a newbie, and it makes me a bit nervous to lift free weights with all the muscle bound regulars.....so I feel for the resolutioners struggling to get started. Hats off to them I say!0

I'm just going to stay away. My gym only has two Olympic bars. TWO!0

I bet people think I am a newbie a few times a year but in all reality I am pretty dedicated, I only use the gym when other options/fitness rooms/ childcare opportunities are too tricky. I run, I do workouts at home, I use the fitness room at my school, I hike, or ice skate or do crazy intervals in between loads of wash.....but when I do use the gym I I do not want to be treated like a newbie.
I can speak to the mild aggravation of the "newbie" though. When my kids were a little younger I required the childcare more and even when I just needed to knock a few miles out on a beautiful day sometimes I had to hit a treadmill so my kids were cared for. I was pretty regular in our gym. I hated to be inconvenienced by someone walking slowly on a TM and chatting with a friend next to them when I had a minimum amount of time to get my **** done, get out of there etc. I wanted to encourage them to keep at it and do their best but mostly I needed them to clear the TM so I could get my work done.0 -

I don't look foward to the influx of people (oh the crowds), but I do remember the uncertain feeling when I first crossed into the weight section of my local gym. I wish them the best...in away it maybe fun to watch them from day to day as they fall out or push on. So the answer is yes I will be there Jan 2.0

The more the merrier. Today's newbie may be March's eye candy We all started somewhere. In my case it was a pic of a fat guy cooking crabs on his birthday.0
-
Things to remember - the influx helps keep your membership fees low. Also, everyone was new at one point in time, including you.
So instead of moaning and crying, maybe lend a helping hand to someone who might be nervous, shy, or faltering. Maybe because of your kindness, they'll turn into a regular as well as get more fit.0
