Step 1: Admiting I have a problem

Hi! My name is Jennifer and I am addicted to Diet Soda!!!!

Ok MFP's I can't just stop drinking it b/c I get the side effects like headaches and irritability. Soda seems to be a building block of me over eating. The sugary sweetness of it makes me want to eat more.

How have you gotten over your soda addiction? Any tips will be much appreciated =)

I take a vivarin every day (200 mg of caffeine). This helps with the cravings for me :) It at least will give you a start... Otherwise unsweetened iced tea or coffee. :)

Cold turkey, I was drinking so much softdrink, like 1.5 litres of coke a day. When I stopeed smoking cold turkey I also stopped drinking anything other than water and milk. I gave up junk food and sweets not long after. The headaches will subside after your body adjusts. Good luck.

Can you find a tea you really like? that's how I gave up coke zero, although I did find diet soda reduced my appetite because it made me feel full and bloated. The real reason I'm trying to give it up all together is that it is really bad for my teeth and my enamel.

I stopped cold turkey three years ago. I was probably drinking at least a 2 liter every day. It was tough and I felt like crap for about 3 days. You will get through it!!!!! Good luck.

I too was a diet soda junkie. I had to quit cold turkey and now I drink water only. It took me about a week to stop craving it. When I go out, I'll have a club soda with lime. This may be an option for you to still have the bubbly sensation without the chemicals. Good luck to you.

As of Sunday I am completely Diet Coke free :) I went from easily drinking a 2L+ per day to none in about 2 weeks.

I tried quitting cold turkey and that was a HUGE mistake for me! I had the worst headache i had ever had in my life and I was horribly sick to my stomach.

I decided to track how much Diet Coke I drank in a given day. I then gradually reduced that amount each day over a 2 week period. I seriously had each day of that 2 week period mapped out:
    Day 1: 68oz allowed
    Day 2: 60oz allowed
    Day 3: 54oz allowed, etc

I know it sounds kind of crazy but that's what it took for me to wean myself off of it. I had no headaches or other side effects. I'm still drinking a lot but it's now water instead of Diet Coke.

This and swapping at least some of the soda for the carbonated flavored waters that are available. That should ease the pain of withdrawals.

Diet soda is fine. If you like it keep drinking it.
  • I have always been addicted to soda. Not the diet stuff Mt. Dew was my poison. Been drinking soda since I was a young kid and was so addicted I would wake up during the night and drink my dew. I could not stand water and would only drink it on the rare occasion in the summer heat when I would drink several sodas and could not quench my thirst. Then I might drink a whole bottle of water. If I had to guess I bet I drank at least a 6 pack a day and I'm thinking maybe more like a 12 pack or more. Well back in June I found out I was gonna be a grandma and that made me start thinking about my health. First thing I did was stop smoking. Never thought I could do that but I did. So next was my weight but I had to be able to handle water and leave the pop alone if that was gonna work. So I decided to cut back to one a day. I did this for 2-3 weeks. When I lived (lol) I knew I could do it if I could just make myself drink more water. I used some hypnotic cds and I don't know if they really worked for hypnotizing but I did start liking the taste of water. I stopped drinking the soda all together without the headaches or cravings and 6 months later I'm still not drinking it. I drink a minimum of 5 bottles of water a day. I never thought that would happen!
