I suffer from the ULTIMATE in all stomach bloatiness and it makes my life hell!!

I went to the doctors about this for years, and nobody could tell me what was wrong, till 4 years down the line I went back and said I've had enough. Had numerous tests done to be told I had an infection in the lining of my stomach causes this and abdominal pain, took anti-biotics for a week and boom it went away.

For all of 2 frigging weeks - now I am back to being completely bloated. I wake up with a flat stomach, have some cereal and BOOM I look pregnant. It puts me off eating all together.

Any help?
Thanks so much, Tanya:flowerforyou:

OK - I also suffered with Bullimia for 2 years, could this be an affect that has only recently arisen?

I NEVER used to ever get bloated until a few years ago and it has been about 3 years since I got over my disorder.

I am at the end of my tether and really want to resolve this -

I can't really offer much help, but just wanted to say hope you get better soon hun :flowerforyou:

Have you told the doc about your eating disorder? Perhaps you should ask him to refer you to a specialist? Maybe even a dietitian- they could look at what foods you can/can't eat? xx

No I never thought to mention it where I have put it all behind me (still hard at times) but it's only now after looking at forums on the internet and I figured it could be the result of my bloatiness.

    I will mention this now.

    Thanks so much! xx

Tanya.. I didnt realise you had Bullimia a few years back - it must have been a toughy to get back into the normal eating habit.. Maybe this is whats causing it.. your stomach isnt used to holding down the foods still so its reacting in this way??

I can only say just stick to natural foods - nothing too processed.. must be a bummer.. :frown:

Like sparklepants said.. see the doc - or dietitian and see what they say..

    Good luck sweety x x x

Taking any kinds of medications? I know when I was on Depo I would bloat REALLY bad! It was horrible. The same thing with you - I'd wake up in the am and look fabulous, by lunch time I was felt huge like a giant balloon! I tried Gas X, Beano, Tums . . . . I'm off Depo now, but every once in awhile I will get that way around my TOM.

I noticed when I drink water or herbal tea it tends to help. I also heard straight cranberry (?) juice helps - not the sugary stuff, but the organic stuff you can find in health stores. (And try to limit sodium/extra salt!!)

you might also ask your doctor if a test was done for celiac disease (allergy to wheat products). it's not commonly tested for.

if you get your bloat as soon as you eat cereal, that could be a possible cause.

Oh dear, that sounds horrible. I suffer from IBS and can get really bloated (imagine pregnant with twins about to pop kind of look) so I can sympathise. I feel that you do need to tell your doctor everything. They can only help if they have all the info. One thing they may suggest is keeping a food diary - which you already do! So, print out a couple of weeks worth and take it with you to the appointment. I also recommend using the notes section each day to note how you feel. You may notice a pattern yourself.

It is completley different for everyone, but I find I can't tolerate cereal with milk in the mornings. Completely bloats me out. Have you tried eating something different?

For me, prime candidate for causing bloating is sodium. Boring I know, but I have to keep it under about half of what MFP reccomends. I do find that eating a banana in the mornings isn't too bad and can help when I do feel bad.

Other things which set off my bloat are:

bread made with yeast - white is very definitely worse. I can tolerate small amounts of wholemeal, but not a lot. I can however eat pitta bread, wraps etc...anything that doesn't have yeast with the wheat.

    too much fat

alcohol (probably because it is fermented)

too much dairy (probably the fat content)

I *try* and avoid these things, and when I do I generally feel better although sometime it just seems to happen for no apparent reason.

Anyway, my message is go back to your doctor with your food diary. Tell him/her everything. You may need some blood tests to rule out cealiac disease etc and you may need to see a dietician, but the docs is a good place to start.

All the best, and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Tanya

I have suffered from really bad IBS & bloating for years, very similar in description to Erika's. LOL I find the main culprits are Rice & Pasta and rather oddly..... Tea & Coffee ( As in cups of ). Since starting on MFP I changed to herbal or just Lemon & hot water to cut the amount of calories used in tea with milk & sugar. Since doing this I have hardly had any bloating.
Just a thought that may help
BTW Tell your Dr about the Bulmia, they do find it hard to make a proper diagnosis without all the info.

Hmmmm . . . . . dairy. If you're lactose intolerant, that can do it sometimes as well.

I was going to suggest the same - you should check into food allergies that could be causing this.

I was tested for this and it came back negative which was a relief but at the same time didn't help with coming to the end of why I am bloating.

Thanks so much Erika & Karen!

This is really good advice and I have now made an appointment with my GP for next week, complete with a few weeks food diary.

I have also just purchased Digestive Enzyme tablets which are supposed to help digestion and help with bloatiness. I will see what the doc says about taking these also.

Thanks very much for your advice - I appreciate it more than you know.
    Have a great weekend.
    All the best,
    Tanya xx

You're welcome. Let us know how you get on with the doc, it might take a bit of trial and error.

One thing I forgot to mention is that products like Activia etc make me worse! I'm just weird. There are also the obvious things like beans, cabbage etc but I find those to be 'short term' influences if you catch my drift!

Take care of yourself and ask if you need any help,

    Erika x
