Newly lactose intolerant

So over the holidays I had a tummy bug which apparently knocked out my ability to digest lactose!
I had a few days of horrible gas and diarrhea before I realized what the problem was.
I've started using lactaid but am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with this new wrinkle in my diet.

I drink ( and use in m y protein mixes) unsweetend coconut milk.... cant even taste the difference...Love it.... Ive also tried almond milk which is OK but a lil heavy in weight for my liking0

Since it's new for you, you may have some trial and error to see what you can & can't eat. My husband is lactose intolerant, but he can still eat yogurt (not buckets of it, but does well with a serving a day), mozzarella cheese sticks, Parmesan on pasta, he still puts a little half & half in his coffee, and butter on his toast.
Regular ice cream is a no-go for him, but coconut milk ice cream varieties are becoming easier to find, and he enjoys those over the soy products.
Other milk alternatives are almond or rice milk, both of which he likes better than soy - buy a couple and experiment with what you like best.
If you can tolerate yogurt, plain greek yogurt makes a great substitute for sour cream on baked potatoes or Mexican food!0 -
Humans are the only mammals who consume lactose after puberty on a regular basis which is why so many adults become lactose intolerant to some extent or the other we just aren't meant to process the stuff. I have found that I can eat cheese with very little problem but more than about 1/4 a cup of ice cream will make me sick. I can usually eat yogurt without complaint but I can't drink the milk out of my cereal bowl.
I substitute almond milk for my cereal and protein shakes but have no problem with soy milk I have found that for cooking if I don't use real milk the taste is a little bit off so I usually use real milk for things like mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese. Since cheese doesn't bother me I eat the real stuff but have been told substitute cheese is horrible and not even worth the trouble and have also been told it is amazing. The real trick is just figuring out how much you can handle and deciding where you are ok with the substitutes verses where you really want the real stuff. It's different for everyone.0 -
I'm newly lactose intolerant too. Well not newly. I was sick for years every morning or randomly through out the day and it made it almost impossible to go out in public with out worrying. I finally connected it to drinking milk. I drank alooooooot of milk too. I love it. I've tried almond milk ( the sweetened vanilla kind) it kind of gave me the satisfaction of drinking milk but I couldn't really get past the taste. Lactaid has been my savior as well.0

I am very lactose intolerant. Even a tab of butter could have me regretting it for days but honestly it depends on my other dietary intake along side it how bad my symptoms are. It certainly is trail and error as previously noted, some foods might be easier for you than others. I noticed that organic milks by companies that do not inject cows with protein supplements are way easier for me to digest than other milks, greek yogurt has also been a little easier for me to eat as well.

& PS. Skinny Cow's are a great way to have ice cream, they use skim milk which is easier on a lactose intolerant person and still manages to have a ridiculously good flavor.0
