Did anybody see this show last night? I thought it was on at a crappy time for something of such great importance. The full 2 hours will air on Friday. ABC. I intend on watching it for sure!

I just went to take some lotion to my daughter at school. (She has been getting hives. I'm not just taking her lotion for the heck of it) The school was at lunch, so I had to track her down in the cafeteria. I got a good look at the foods the kids were eating and thought immediately to that show.

My daughter occasionally orders off the vegetarian menu, but normally takes a lunch from home. Today was grilled cheese. It came in a package, so clearly not more than warm cheese sandwich. Then there was this pile of whitish stuff. Looked like potato salad, she said it was pudding....... OMG! I told her DO NOT EAT THAT! Thankfully she had filled 2 of her little compartments with salad and veggies. And thankfully I send her with healthy treats and snacks, like fruits and veggies every day. Our district is one of the better ones in this state. The menu was recently revamped to include less saturated fat. Unfortunately, the veggie menu is just a new form of cheese and bread everyday. Sadly the awesome salad bar they have, is limited servings per kid. Something my kid really complains about. Funny, a kid complaining that adults won't let them have more veggies. Go figure.

I really hope this show does something. I think Jamie Oliver is awesome! (And sexy:wink:) I hope this show gets a slot in a primetime slot where FAMILIES can see it. 10pm on a Sunday, not great. Fridays should get a few more viewers. Families with school aged kids and such. I think this show is a better idea than The Biggest Loser. Nobody is in it to win money, its just about education. Its about time we start thinking about just health. Not weighing people in public, sabatoging others for monetary gain, or unrealistic, insane weightlosses. Just plain and simple whole foods. I love it!

Jamie Oliver is my hero. He is the TED award winner this year for his fight against childhood obesity. I started a thread here to join his Food Revolution

I only caught that last 20 min of it. I didn't understand why the staff was so negative toward Jamie. I think it's a wonderful thing that he is doing. He's using his strength and fame to be an advocate for our children's health. Nothing to complain about there! My DD also doesn't buy her lunch at school. She thinks the food is gross. Our school offers vegetarian options, but like yours it's bread based. :grumble: They offer wraps and hummus, but my DD thinks their hummus is gross (loves my homemade hummus  ). I think it's not only the food choices they offer, but the quality of the food.
I'm going to set my DVR so I don't miss the Friday episode!

I totally forgot about it...will have to watch it Friday. I love JO I have several of his books. My daughter also takes her lunch to school and it's not because they offer crap food, she's in a private school and they have 'take out' every day. She is allowed to order once a week...she ususally chooses Papa Johns on Mondays (1 slice of cheese pizza-I pack veggies and fruits). They also have Arbys on Tuesdays, Chik fil a on Wednesday, Subway on Thursdays and Moes on Fridays. All the items are good and nurticious but I feel are lacking in veggies most days. Usually my daughter takes edamame, tofu or turkey rollups with a salad and some type of fruit.
I do know that the public schools in my area are pretty good. I graduated from one of the local high schools...and our vegeratian options are great (I lead the revolution back my freshman year). We demanded a better salad bar and vegetarian and vegan options. I met so many other vegetarians during my years there due to my protests.
Anyway, I love JO and I need to remember this time to watch it.

I'm so bummed I missed this last night. I don't have kids, but I think the show sounds fascinating. I just set the TIVO to record it on Friday in case I forget about it again! Thanks for the reminder. =)
  • So, did you guys catch it on Friday? I missed the first hour because I was in class.

That Alice lady was on my last nerve. Jamie is a nice guy, I would have told her off. She was just plain rude, IMO. Her eye rolling and walking away without answering was soooooooo childish. Get over it lady, your not a REAL cook, you're a paid food reheater! She even said, "I do this for the money." How very very sad!

And I was shocked that those kids ate those chicken nuggets after seeing how they are made. And that nobody knew that french fries come from potatoes, let alone what a potato is in the first place. Grrrr, that made me mad!

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens at the high school next week.

We missed the first half as well(we were at my daughters school for a play- Midsummer Nights Deam-was very well done too).

Loved it...watched it with my hubby and daughter. She knew what every single veggie Jamie held up was. I wasn't proud of her...I don't have to be...she learned it all while growning up in a house with a vegetarian, lol. The funny thing is...my daughter doesn't really like french fries or chicken nuggets.
I cannot believe the responce from the kitchen staff. The knives and forks...oh my goodness. My daughter uses both (even at school...granted they are plastic) she uses metal at home-just not the sharp ones...but she still knows how to use them.
I can't wait for next week.

If anyone has missed it, you can catch the first two episodes on Hulu. I just watched the first two last night. Five minutes into the show and I said "Oh man! If I have kids I'm going to have to homeschool them!" (Or at least pack their lunches and make sure they don't trade them for Twinkies and Coke!)

I was the most angry about that silly "two breads per day" regulation. Seriously? Pizza crust counts but brown rice doesn't? Wow.

Bump...hopeing more people will watch it.
  • Yes the bread thing was insane! I went through a bunch of stuff a few years ago trying to open a in-home daycare. The diet regulations are ridiculous! I gave up on it because it was way too much government control in my opinion. I'm curious how they manage those regulations for a child with, say a gluten/wheat allergy. Do you still need 2 breads? Cuz rice bread is pretty darn expensive.

I forgot about the knife thing. My mouth was on the floor! She was so against kids using them, what the heck, lol! Jamies face was priceless. Its not like he was asking to give each child a mechete for cryin out loud!

I watched both hours on Friday night and was so mad, after, that I actually had to take a walk. I think Jamie Oliver is awesome and look what he has done for his own public school system, in his country. They way most of those people treated him was so horrible and I hope they are all ashamed of themselves now that it has been on TV. (although I doubt it!) It brought tears to my eyes, though, to watch him teach the young man how to cook and how much interest Jamie took into it. I think someone else said that they wished that he would have done it in a town that was more welcoming to him and I have to agree. I would be the first person to jump on the band wagon if he came to my town and I think my kids would be right behind me. My girls always told me, when they were growing up and in school, how much they hated the school lunches. I did not make them eat them unless they wanted to! I tried to pack their lunches as much as I humanly could. On a side note, I was quite interested in seeing that it was Ryan Seacrest that produced this! He is a weightloss success story himself.

    Cool, thanks!
I used to watch him on food network (when they used to show Naked Chef). I wish foodnetwork would go back to the basics of cooking instead of all the competition stuff (I do enjoy it...but come-on it's about cooking). I'd love it if they showed him again and Julia Child's old shows, Nigella Lawson, Ellie Kreiger (I never see enough of her stuff). I'd really love to see a show directed at kids only...that would be awesome.

I wonder if life for some people (communities) is really like this. It's so sad.

I am finally watching it. for those of you who missed it don't worry you can see it for free at www.hulu.com.

Gonna catch up on it tomorrow, is it NBC that shows it? Well whatever network it's shown on airs it again on the net. That's how I caught a couple of the episodes. Love it when the networks do that:drinker:

I love this show on so many levels.
If I get started on my thoughts I will end up writing a novel & getting political ,no one ever agrees with my political views, seems like I am the last conservative republican out here. And these days I might as well admit to being a drug kingpin, infact I'd likely get more respect . All I will say is this re: lunch program & gov't regulations, this is the perfect example of what happens when the federal government gets into the business of regulating EVERYTHING in your life. Off topic .....I will stop now.

So I will only say that I love Jamie Oliver, used to watch him all the time as the Naked Chef on Food Network. I think the people in that town are more typical of SOME ( NOT ALL) small towns than we care to admit. Close minded and very protective of their " traditions" and leary of any "outsiders" coming in tho help them. In my opinion they should be ashamed of themselves. They were rude & nasty . Where the heck was the southern hospitality we hear so much about? Now, my comments are based on the first weeks show, I am watching the 2 ? I missed today. So they may have realized Jaimes intentions are for the good of those children, but we'll see. I admire him for his determination and hope like hell he is succesfull but I have my doubts. I wish he would not have done the chicken nugget demo., it made me gag. literally I was gagging.......I really enjoy Wendys chicken nuggets. I hope he was talking about some crappy cheap, store brand, generic nuggets. Not "all white meat" chicken nuggets.......???
This is a GREAT show and people need to wake up and see this. But they wont. It is way too easy too stay fat, to keep doing what you've always done, change is hard and it's way too hard to loose weight. You actually have to put forth some effort and think before you cram food down your gullet. Until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change they wont do it. Some people just dont get it.

The only other thing I will say is who the hell hired that cranky old lunchlady? She really needs to read the employee manual regarding insubordination! (sp) Oh my goodness, I hope they keep her away from those sweet children, what a witch!!
Dont hate me because I have an opinion. I really am a nice person. Just outspoken. I warned you it was gonna be long :blushing:

I LOVE this show! Yes, I loved what he did at the university as well - I think it's great that he's teaching people not only to cook - but to have fun with it. The field trip that he took the DJ on was a real eye opener for me.... I guess I never thought of those realities (sorry trying not to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it).

Jbuffan - I'm pretty conservative too, and yes, I agree that the federal government needs to to stop regulating everything.

However, I tend to be a little more on the "glass is half full" side of things. I think that the federal govt tried to regulate these things because of the poorer school districts who were not ABLE to feed the kids proper lunches. I think the BIGGEST issue is that we, in America, have completely lost touch with reality about what healthy eating is. Really... I think most people have NO idea!

I think Huntington is not only like some small towns across America -I think it's pretty typical of ANY town in America. No one wants to be told that they're fat.... in America. fat might as well be a four letter word... we use every word we can to avoid it... overweight, heavy, plump, big boned, big, large... but we won't use terms like fat, obese, morbidly obese.

I don't think that they need to be "ashamed of themselves" - they reacted the way that most people with a fat mentality would. I've been there. I had a boss a few years ago... no matter what I was eating he would walk up to me and tell me... "That's going to make you fat." Ummm... "Excuse me? Who asked you? Why do you care? And who the heck made you the food police?" That's basically what Jamie has done... he walked into a town that did not ask for help, that did not want his help and he ruffled some feathers. I'm GLAD that he did and I think that by the time he's done... everyone will be glad... but the reactions are normal, human reactions.

As for the Southern Hospitality that you've heard so much about... please don't forget that the same people whom you hear about being so friendly and asking "Come on in, didja eat yet?" also keep a loaded shot gun just inside the door... there's a REASON they can have southern hospitality! NOBODY wants to be judged!

And Alice... she's not so bad. She's set in her ways, and yes, she's cranky.... but she realizes that Jamie's way is going to mean a lot more work for her! Until he shows her that it can be done with less effort, she's going to continue to fight him, I"m sure! She's not being insubordinate... Jamie's not her boss, lol!

I think the show is interesting because it really does show REAL emotions and it shows REAL reactions. I think the show is awesome and I love that he's doing it.

I don't hate you for having an opinion... and I hope you don't hate me for debating it!

I have been watching the show faithfully every Friday night, but last night (with the university and the whole 1000 people deal) I was a little disappointed. The show focused too much on what was going on in the town instead of getting the word out on how to cook!

I don't know if it's stupid Ryan Seacrest's producing, or what, but I would have loved to see the actual recipe so people at home (that need help too) can learn from it! the whole purpose of the show is to get the word out on how to be healthier, but so far, I don't think it's getting through.

    Just my 2 cents

Sonja, your points are well taken. You have a thoughtful consideration of the people involved. I'm sure it doesn't help that JO is not only a Brit, but has a camera crew with him. Nothing worse than a Hollywood Brit!

Jbuffan, as far as government regulation, I agree the rules are imbecilic, and the government is definitely culpable, but let's not forget who created the food pyramid. The agricultural industry. The lobbyists had the major hand in defining what 2 portions of bread are. And if the schools want to get reimbursement from the feds for student meals, they have to abide by those idiotic and dangerous standards.

At the root of it, it's always about the money.

And for many of those kids, any food is better than no food, and their families are not going to risk having that taken away. I love Jamie Oliver and his cause, it's a quagmire though.

You can actually find the recipe on the website for the Food Revolution. I used it this week... yummm!
My husband and I agree though - he needs to cook something else... and show how to cook different things. And I think that they should have something on there about "for these and other delicious recipes visit www....."

Yah, that's why I asked if anybody was watching it, I didn't want to spoil anything either, but the university thing was very cool, but the field trip with the DJ.. OMG :noway: I didn't think about it either . I mean custom sizes, cargo vans, cranes? Doesn't seem to a very nice way to say good bye to someone you love.

There's many people in society like the DJ, and the "cranky lady". They have tunnel vision. close minded, and don't want to open up to new concepts, new ideas. Sometimes people like that have to see something for their own eyes, because no matter what you say, they choose not to listen.
. I think the BIGGEST issue is that we, in America, have completely lost touch with reality about what healthy eating is. Really... I think most people have NO idea!
    BINGO!!
Looks at all the people posting about "healthy" versions from fast food places, restaurants, frozen dinners. They are still loaded with many fats, sugars, and sodium. Any company seems they can use the word "healthy". If the one product has less fat that their other version, then it's a healthy version, even though it can be loaded with salt and sugar.
i am still sadden by the elementary children unable to identify fruits or vegetables. Especially the child whom thought an eggplant was egg salad

I was totally blown away that none of the kids knew any of the vegetables. I can understand eggplant.
I thought they should have gotten potato, and if not potato, then tomatoes.
None of those kids parents, friends parents are growing tomatoes in the summer time?

Recipes on his site, I went looking last night, and there are LOTS of recipes.
Also a petition to sign, and wondering how many of you have signed?
April 1st, he had 100,000+, today he has 239,258
