Salt

Question. Do you all salt your food or cook with salt? It's no surprise to me or anyone who knows me that I use a lot but I never realized how much until I started tracking the extra salt that I put on my food. OMG!!! I'm at almost five times my recommended sodium intake. I have noticed that I bloat easily and I have pretty deep dark circles under my eyes, probably from water retention. What are your views on salt/sodium? Any tips on how to cut back? I feel like my food would taste SO bland, considering I don't use any butter and very, very little oil. It has to have SOMETHING to give it flavor...

Try spices other than salt. You could also try Mrs Dash if you don't want to experiment with your own spice combos.

I love salt and it indirectly keeps me fuller (more salt makes me drink more water which helps me feel fuller). I have slightly low blood pressure and I don't really notice any bloating/water retention so I haven't found a reason to limit my salt intake.

I don't worry about my sodium intake. I sweat enough on a daily basis.

Unless you're on a low-sodium diet, there's nothing wrong with using a saltshaker. The biggest salt minefields are store-bought processed foods, and many of the highest-sodium foods don't even taste particularly salty.

Are you using pre-made soups, sauces, and stocks in your cooking? Could you substitute a lower-sodium product, or a homemade version?

You can also search the web (or the library) for low-sodium recipes. These will give you some ideas for spice combinations.

This right here. I use the Garlic & Herb as well as the Southwest Chipotle (the seasoning blends, not the marinades.) The first on my chicken and the second on popcorn! I think the extra kick from the other spices helps curb the desire to salt anything.

I do have a rather stocked spice rack and use sea salt from time to time, but I've cut way back on salt unless I am really hitting the water hard that day.

Morton lite salt. It's balanced with potassium.
