Milk Substitute

Okay, I admit I've seen some posts about this, but I need opinions. I am a HUGE milk lover. I was drinking 2+ glasses of whole milk a day before my son was born. He's lactose intolerant so no more milk for me. I tried almond milk but it was way to nutty tasting so it's out of the running. I hate buying a huge carton just to try it but I need something besides juice, water, and tea to drink (especially with my cookies!!). Those of you who've had both regular milk and substitutes, what is the closest to the "real deal"?? Let me know your thoughts and I'll give another type a shot.

Why don't you buy a carton of substitute for your son and a carton of real milk for yourself?0

Just buy a half gallon of 1 or 2%.0

I am not sure where you live, but I live in Ontario Canada and we can get Natrel Lactose Free milk and it is amazing! My b/f is lactose intolerant and this milk is perfect for him. I can drink it and not even tell the difference. It is more costly but for him, its worth it so he can have milk again without suffering!0

Try vanilla coconut milk! Make sure you gt the sweetened if you like the milk taste, or if you want unsweetened and just add a sweetener such as trivia, that's good too!! Milk has way to many hormones these days, just can't trust animal products like you use to.0

Try the Lactaid milk - lactose-free and only tastes slightly different than regular milk. Or go for one of the small containers of rice or coconut milk (Trader Joe's and most grocery stores carry them now), and experiment until you find the taste you like best. There are so many varieties - sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla, chocolate, etc - some are better for mixing in a smoothie, others for dunking cookies.
Hope you find what you like!0 -

I drink both almond and soy milk, but it's because I don't like the taste of milk and they don't taste like milk.
If your son is lactose intollerant but not allergic to milk, why not just buy lactose free milk?0 -
Ahh, I forgot a major point. I'm breastfeeding so no dairy for me since he can't handle it. I love the idea of a lactose free milk. I looked at Target and a local grocery store but they didn't have anything like that. I also looked for soy yogurt since I miss it also but it's been a no-go so far.. I wonder if Walmart or Whole Foods would carry it.0

My hubby is lactose-intolerant, so we have experimented with a lot of stuff. He doesn't care for any of the soy stuff. He actually does ok with regular yogurt though. I have seen a coconut-based yogurt popping up at Trader Joe's and somewhere else....can't remember where, but check your local stores.
Dairy alternatives are getting much easier to find - if your store doesn't carry something, ask about it - maybe they'll bring it in!0 -

If you are breastfeeding, the last thing you want to do is feed your growing baby boy soy. Soy is estrogenic, meaning it will raise his estrogen levels.
He is a growing baby that needs his testosterone.
Here are some other studies done from the University of Illinois showing how soy is bad for babies in general.

If almond milk is out of the running then try oat milk, otherwise you are pretty much out of options. Buy almond/hazelnut milk and try to get used to the taste!0

trader joes carries soy yogurt, and almost all grocery stores carry LACTAID milk which is regular cow milk with the lactose removed. Tastes normal.
Or you can just take a lactaid pill before you drink regular milk- your son will get it in the breast milk and likely be fine.0 -
try goat milk
some people, but not all, are able to digest goat milk when they cannot digest cow milk
i grew up on a dairy goat farm, and half our customers were people who were lactose intolerant.
get it fresh, if you can, though, because sometimes (not always) store bought milk tastes....goaty. grosssssss.0 -
I am also lactose intolerant and have an ear/nose/throat allergy to milk. Personally I like soymilk the best, it's not nutty. Silk is gmo-free and you can buy organic silk. I usually get the light vanilla or regular vanilla. I think they have a non-vanilla one too. They also have chocolate.0
