Opinions on best shoes

Looking for a great shoe for HIIT, high impact cardio (Les Mills Body Attack, Zumba, etc) and the like. If you have any opinions on a combo - a cross trainer that is also acceptable for running - that would be ideal. Right now, I have Asics and while I love them and they have proven to be OK for walking/light running, they kill my feet for the other stuff and that is what I'm really into.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

I really think you would be better off with 2 different shoes. If you are getting decent miles running, you should have a running shoe and then find another shoe that works for your other activities.

I have a pair of Brook's "Ghost" trainers that I really love.

They need replacing though, so I'm bumping your thread for ideas =)
  • I use Reebok zigs. I LOVE them. I do HIIT like turbofire with them and they work for me! Good luck!

Reebok makes quite a different variety... I have 3 pairs... one for HIIT, one for hockey and another for gym... I would recommend looking into the styles of Reebok.

I agree, don't try to use one shoe for both. Running shoes are all about forward movement, whereas cross trainers have significantly more lateral support. You need the lateral support for the programs you're interested in.

Shoes are totally a personal decision, so what works for me may not work for you - but the cross trainers I use are Rykas. I've been pretty happy with them so far. They only make shoes for women.

I've always believed in the view that you don't run in your cross-training shoes and you don't cross train in your running shoes. I do all my cross-training barefoot and haven't ever found a need for shoes, but I workout at home so can do that easily.

try New Balance , they are very light to wear and i love mine
  • I Agree with the previous posts that it sounds like you need 2 different shoes.

For Zumba I use dance sneakers. Bloch makes a couple split sole options that I like, and they're a lot lower than the capezio versions. Sanita also makes a decent dance sneaker. (I highly recomend the site discountdance.com if you're looking to go the route of dance sneakers, just be sure to read the sizing guides).

But by the same token I would never try to do serious running/walking/anything but dance inspired workouts in those shoes.

Hope you find a solution that works.
  • Check out Road Runner Sports online. They have some stores too. You can see ratings for the shoes, different shoes for different sports and foot types etc.

Hm. I'd want a fairly flat "multi-directionally" supportive shoe for HIIT. With a running shoe, you're falling in one direction mainly (stumbling etc are exceptions). The thing I'd also consider is how I land - if you can land ball-of-foot first then you can choose a thinner soled shoe. I mean, if the sole is quite thick but spongey and you have a lot of sideways movement, you can increase the risk of a sprained ankle should your foot roll too far when leaping sideways. With this in mind, something like a tennis shoe might be a good choice.

    Christ, I do ramble.

Have you thought about Barefoot shoes? My wife and I love our Merrell's. She has the Women's Barefoot Train Lithe Glove and does crossfit, boot camp, and trail running in them.

I use my Trek Sport vibrams 5 fingers for everything I do. For me they work better and less risk of twisting my ankles during more dancy or jumpy cardio.

I have heard a lot of good things about Merrell and the reviews I've read are all wonderful. Definitely considering - thanks for your response!

Thanks so much for all the advice! I figured that running & cross training would be best with two different shoes. I'm not a runner yet but I am definitely on that track. For now, I'm very involved in cross training so I will search for a shoe that focuses more on just that.
