Extra Cardio or Calorie Borrowing?

My husband is bringing me back my favorite coney dogs from his trip out of town. I am already salivating just thinking about them but I don't want to completely sabotage my day. Would it be better to add in extra cardio or to borrow calories from another meal?

  • I think either one, or neither one will be fine. You can always calll this a cheat day. Unless you plan on eating 3500 calories of coney dogs (which is what comprises one pound of real fat), then you are not going to do hardly any damage whatsoever eating some coney dogs! I wouldn't borrow calories from another meal, b/c it's hard to plan the future for tomorrow or the next day and you may need all the calories you can get those days. I, personally, would do a a little extra cardio if that's what you do to exercise. If you plan to complete, say, 30 minutes of cardio today, add an extra five/ten minutes to your workout so help curb the feeling that you are ruining a diet for one day of splurging. Which you are not, so enjoy your coney dogs!!!

I would go with extra exercise. That's been one of my plans all along and it works really well. I do have to burn the calories before I eat the food too. Always been afraid I'd eat something and then not want to do the exercise. "Borrowing" calories can get to be a slippery slope.

Coney dogs are what? 340 calories plus the calories from the condiments? Eat one, enjoy it fully, and adjust the rest of your day to accommodate this treat.

If you are tempted to follow the first one with more, check in with your body. Will you love yourself more by eating it or not eating it? Usually I find that a little of a treat food is delicious and feels great, but bolting down more of it just leads to me feeling not-so-great about myself.

On the other hand, when my dad was dying and I'd just taken him in from an MRI that we fully expected meant his brain tumor was back, I ate a couple cookies and realized I wanted to eat the whole box. I gave myself permission and went ahead and did it. Right then, the comfort eating was what I needed.

I got right back on track after that. Never did feel guilty about it, either.
