stress eating

So just to sum up how I ended up here trying to lose weight. I've done 4 years in the military which for the past year has been the greatest struggle for me. We were the first to respond to the Tsunami in Japan in 2011 and then when we got back to the states 9 months later my now fiance got out of the military and moved back home to spend time with family and go to College. A month later I got transfered from sunny CA to rainy WA. At least in CA my mom was only a 3 hour drive away. So I get stuck up in WA and my chain of command is full of a bunch of jerks that think women shouldnt be in the military. I was the only girl so I always got the worst jobs, like cleaning male bathrooms that hadnt been touched for over 6 months after a 9 month deployment. So here I was with no family, no fiance, and no one really worth calling a real friend and beaing treated like crap at work. So I would stay in my barracks room that had no kitchen and eat froxen foods or fast food and just keep to myself. Then it got to the point where the guys at work would make fun of me and call me fat or if someone brought in donuts to work they would tell me that I didnt need any. My chief had even told me that for my height and age I should weigh 105. :explode: Mind you I am 5'4 and top heavy, even when I was 117 in high school I looked like a twig with a big chest. I couldnt believe my chief would have even made a comment of my weight. Anyway, so finally in May my fiance comes to live with me. Finally things seemed to cool down and I got transfered because I injured my back. My fiance proposed and all was great. Then I went home for the first time in 2.5 years to see my extended family and they all kept talking about how I gained weight. :grumble: I just wasnt that 117 lb teenager they remember from highschool. Well now my childhood best friend is getting married in March. I am her Maid of Honor. I would like to lose 8-10 lbs by then. I am also having my wedding in August. I would really love to lose 15-20 lbs total. Not because people call me fat, but because I want to be healthier and feel happy in my own skin. My dad has diabetes and so did his mom so I dont want to live my life that way. My fiance has been great support. He knows when Im hungry or if its just stress eating. He usually takes the junk food away and asks me to play some fun game on the wii or something to distract me. He tells me he thinks Im absolutely beautiful and I dont need to lose weight but if losing weight makes me happier then he will help me get to my goal. Its a great feeling but sometimes i feel like he says that because he loves me. I signed my mom up for MFP today too and her and I will be losing weight together from far away. She wants to fit into her beautiful dress for my wedding too. I dont know how to do the groups thing or what not but some encouragement from someone that isnt my fiance or best friend would help. Im not usually one to share how I really feel about my weight since Im used to brushing everyones comments off. Sometimes it just sucks because I was fine until everyone started to have an opinion about it :grumble:

If your doctor says you can walk and run, may I suggest changing stress eating to stress running? It took my brain awhile to get the idea and I've been doing it for a year, but as of right now when I get stressed my first urge is not to eat, it's to run, and I'm loving it!
My brain is stubborn, yours might catch on much faster!0 -
Thanks for your service to our country. And I'm sorry you had to serve with a bunch of jerks (they were supposed to be on our side, right?) Your fiance sounds like a gem. He probably sees in you what I see in my darling wife: a wonderful **complete** woman, not just a bunch of groovy curves. And my mom lectures me on my weight every time I see her (twice a year) and I'm almost 50.
I think you are doing the right thing by getting yourself to a healthy lifestyle now. I am challenged by my need to change many habits to get to that healthy lifestyle, after having let things slip farther and farther over the years. Like you, i eat when I am stressed out. I like the other poster's suggestion to find another outlet for your stress, whether it's running or whatever floats your boat.
I wish you a wonderful wedding and an even better marriage,
Paul0 -
I actually cannot run or walk too long. I have a problem with my feet that has ended up screwing up my back too. Its so bad its to the point that even at home walking around bare foot or standing in one place too long while cooking will hurt my feet to the point where I can hardly walk the next day. Doc's say they cant do anything for me. They cant even operate because there is no guarantee that it will even help. Plus its like 30 n below where Im at and Im from Southern California so I'm freezing and sick0

@Paul, thank you so much. Your kind words are very encouraging I used to have quite a few hobbies but lately I just go home and want to do nothing. My husband is trying to get me into video games which I think is cute.
Thank you again. Your wife is a very lucky woman to have a man who loves her completely. I am thankful I have found a man that loves me the same. God Bless!0 -

Oh no.
My brother in law has messed up feet but he can bicycle, can you do that? If not, maybe hand weights at a fast enough pace to get the heart rate going (and get those fun endorphins flowing).
Otherwise, maybe an activity that you become very absorbed in would help. Writing, painting, something like that, that takes you out of yourself and makes you forget the things that make you want to head for the fridge.0 -

Yeah, my fiance is trying to get me to play video games with him since you have to pay attention and your hands are busy. He got me the Zumba wii game for Christmas because I told him how I really wish I could do the Zumba class but that I'd look dumb since I cant keep up with everyone because of my feet. So he got me the game and said I can do it at my own pace. I think Im going to try it this weekend. This is our first weekend without any family visiting from other states.0 -

Well please let me first thank you and your son for the sacrifice you both made for this country.
I would love to swim, I used to in high school but ever since my last deployment I suffer from anxiety and can't stick my head under water because I panic. Lets just say my last and hopefully final deployment took its toll on me. I tried swimming for physical therapy also and when I would hold my breath under water it was as if my lung wanted to collapse.0
