50 for 50 challenge

Hello to everyone :)

After the last year of terrible pains in my knees and the constant embarrassment of being so 'big' with the fear of plane seats, the nightmare of socialising and constant misery of clothes shopping - 2013 is the year I am finally going to get my weight down..

The 50 for 50 challenge relates to the fact I am 50 this year and have decided to challenge myself to lose 50lb before the end of the year.

Weight Watchers, slimming world and a number of wild and wonderful diets have had my attention over the years but have never worked... As soon as i miss a class the diet is over and it is back to the 'treats' !

So now, I am working on the theory (in the words of my lovely daughter)

'diets dont work, you have to find a healthier way of eating that works for you'

I like the look of 'My Fitness Pal' as it seems so easy to count the calories and eat the food I want to.

Hope to meet some fellow dieters on their own challeges here :)

  • Wow - I just turned 50 a few days ago and am starting on the same path as you! My son is the one who told me "diets don't work". Like you - I have tried every diet plan out there with short term success. Life is too short and I want to have more energy and feel better. Thank you for introducing yourself...you are not alone!

Yep, 51 and trying the proper nutrition angle myself. After a month it does seem to be working. Be very honest when you log things! I couldn't believe how many calories are in even a chocolate bite. I still have them but I savor the few I take ... surprisingly that is working. Here's to you and your journey!
  • I've tried it all too. It doesn't work when you think of it as a diet. YOu need to change your lifestyle and choices. I know weight watchers like the back of my hand but if I have a bad week I don't go to weigh in. Kind of ridiculous. I decided to use fitness pal to monitor what goes in as far as calories fat sugar etc. I can then make the changes I need to get healthy. I am 56 and the weight has piled on. Time to take it off! Stay strong and focused.

You can Do It! MFP will help.
I'm 62 and MFP helped me go from 230 to 164 last year. I've gained back a few "holiday pounds", that I'm ready to shed. So, I'll make my goal half my age; to lose 31 pounds this year. That would finally put me in the "normal" range for my height and age.
I know that a combination of tracking my food and regular exercise will get me there.
    Happy New Year!
  • Hi to you all and thanks for replying to my post ;)

Good luck on all your 'journey's' ....here's to less of us in our 50's x

I have just worked out after playing round with the calories that it isn't so much what you eat - it is the extras!!!

For example - chilli and rice - great low cal meal but pop on the cheese, sour cream, garlic bread and a couple of Vinos and ROCKET !
  • Congrats to you all as well on your weight loss so far :smooched:
