Coffee

Just started drinking coffee and wondering if anyone counts as part of their "water" so far I have not, nor do I count anything but water as water (if that makes sense) just wondering what others do :)

Hi..there was a post similar to this the other day... some say liquid is liquid and it counts as water. i count water and herbal tea into my daily count..mostly because coffee is dehydrating and drink three to four cups a day.

I don't count coffee as water. I don't even count water as water. I don't count water. If I'm thirsty, I drink. I drink like at least 6-8 water bottles a day so I know I'm getting enough, but I never saw the point in counting water.

    Which makes it less hydrating?

Nope...it has calories and is a diarrhetic...caffeine dehydrates; pretty much the opposite of water.

I don't count coffee as water because it doesn't hydrate, just my personal preference.

    Incorrect.
  • A regular cup of black coffee brewed or percolated from fresh ground coffee beans has, at most, 2 calories, (it only ends up with more calories if you drink it with something other that just a sugar substitute)
Also, yes, it does count as water. Any fluids you consume count as water.
The diuretic effect of caffeine in drinks and moderate alcohol is trivial compared to the amount of water they contain.

I should add, though, that even though it counts, I still only count regular water by itself as my water intake.

So you workout and go slam a cup of coffee and feel nice and hydrated right? Or before a workout...a nice 8oz mocha or something? Yes, it's liquid and contains water but I would hardly think it's a refreshing source of hydration. I drink a ton of it myself....but it could neve do me after a workout or something to rehydrate.

I'm guessing you didn't read the link I provided earlier. This does not surprise me.

It doesn't count towards your water intake.
  • I stopped drinking coffee altogether in order to lose weight and feel healthy.

Okay new question.... If I do drink coffee since its a diuretic would I need to drink more water to compensate?

How much coffee are you drinking?

See the link I gave earlier.

Read this thread when you're ready to put aside the old wives' tale about coffee/caffeine's diuretic effects and get the 'straight scoop':

There may be about ten calories in a whole pot, but an 8 oz cup of coffee has, at most, 2 calories. Little enough to be completely meaningless.

I don't count coffee as water because it has caffeine and calories. It also will strip out electrolytes, so if you drink a lot of coffee consider supplementing with an electrolyte-rich drink to maintain energy overall.

Drinking extra coffee after consuming a lot of sodium can be helpful with any water retention you may be experiencing.
