Which to get first?

Should I get something like the FitBit first? Or should I just go for an HRM to begin with? I ask because I'd like to know how much I burn in a 24/7 sense, but I also want something for the gym. I only have a tiny amount of spare money to spend and could really only get one at the moment, but am unsure of which. Any and all opinions. advice, etc is very welcome.

go with a good hrm, polar or something
maybe even used, if there is no other option!0 -
It really depends on what you're planning to do at the gym...The HRM won't give you figures for the whole day but it will work for a lot of exercises the fitbit can't register. The fitbit is only designed to track steps and flights of stairs. I have both and I really just go by my HRM when excersing0

Funny you should ask, I received a Polar FT7 HRM for Christmas and I also received money to buy a FitBit One, which I've ordered and should be arriving in the next couple of days. If you'd like, send me a friend request and when it arrives I can compare the two and tell you which I think would be best to get first. I love my HRM so far though. I've only been using it for a week and I already couldn't live without it.0

Request sent. Thanks!
Also, I'm trying to eat healthier, but I'm terrible at it (please don't look at my awful diary!) I'm trying to get better at it, and I know that will definitely help on my calories eaten and that eating healthier gives you more energy -which I could definitely use- but atm we pretty much receive food from family and buy cheap things from wal-mart because we ran into my hours getting cut for a while at work, plus at my work (Dunkin' Donuts) I normally work graveshift and never have time for a lunch break (let alone 5 minutes to rest) and I've been bad at just eating whatever is there. Bought myself some meal replacement shakes to bring to work so I won't be tempted to eat there, even though the food always smells so good and tempts me haha. (I explained in another thread about why I don't just bring foods from home, and shakes were brought up as a way to avoid eating the food)
I know that's off-topic, but it's also one of the reasons I'm conflicted on getting the fitbit type device, or an HRM because I don't work the same amount of hours in a 24hour period, or the same schedule each week and I want my body-fat-loss journey to be as best as it can be. (I don't say weight because I wouldn't mind the weight I am if it were all muscle and less inches, ya know?). o3o I'd like to know my daily burn, and I don't mind waiting on an HRM because I can just use the gym's machine to calculate (even though I know they can be off)0 -
It is a little more expensive ($120, it looks like), but there is the body media fit, which will calculate your daily calories burned, plus exercise.0

Fitbits are like useless in my opinion. It's mostly an expensive pedometer. If you do anything I'd get a HRM but honestly I don't think it's necessary to get where you want to go.0

I downloaded a free pedomoter to my Cellphone. -I tried 4 diferent ones and went with the one that was the closest to actual number of steps taken ( some count certain movements as steps) There are a couple of apps that Sync to MFP-- Check the Apps tab.
I bought a HRM watch- was looking for a pedomoter, but bought the wrong thing by mistake. I'm sure it would be a lot of help if I could figure it out.... but hey it's purple and it keeps the time so I guess it wasn't a total waste of money.
BTW... The HRM isn't designed for extended use. It is meant for things like jogging or running. and the pedomoter is only good for walking. I pretty much have to guestimate everything else.0 -
I have both and like them both. But for me, they have two very different uses. I use the heart rate monitor when i exercise - it gives a consistent calorie burn. For example, if i am on my treadmill, it always over-estimates the calories where the elliptical under-esrimates. With my HRM, i can be consistent in how calories burned are calculated regardless of what exercise i am doing or machine I am using.
I use fitbit to get my 10000 steps - which is above and beyond my other exercise. It is another "tool in my fitness toolbox"0
