A Simple Walk Into Mordor

Hi,
After seeing this video, A Simple Walk Into Mordor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiWJZEZX4Ak I have decided that I would like to walk from Hobbiton to Mount Doom in New Zeland. just like these guys did. However, I would like to beat their time by 2 days, and possibly even climb up the volcano. I will take a few years to get the money to travel.
What is the best way to prep? Is using a weighted vest while on the treadmill the way to go? Also, is there a way to prep your feet for a long distance walk so they will not end up swollen at the end of the journey?

Hey Lady!
I am super excited that you want to do this. I think it is very achievable! I would definitely start looking into hiking. Finding out what kind of gear you will need on such an adventure, and start walking some trails with them. Invest in some really nice hiking shoes/boots, they're heavy so getting used to them would be important. Just like we did in class...brick workouts! With what you need...not really sure. Just know that hiking shoes/boots are very important. (Sport specific shoes) Another thing. I know feet swell naturally from the force of pressure we apply to them during the day. So when you go to get new shoes. Make sure that you are trying them on at the end of the day when your feet are already swollen0 -
OMGosh! That sounds like an awesome idea! I've always wanted to go to New Zealand since the days of Xena. If I ever go, I want to also 'simply walk into Mordor' he he he.0

I have not done much hiking and none in recent years though I would not mind giving it a go again. Due to a slow connection, I have not seen the video but I assume this is a relatively typical hike. To prepare for a hike of any length, I would think starting out on a treadmill with an incline and possibly adding weight to replicate the backpack you would need to carry. Not a super brisk pace, necessarily. I would also go on a series of shorter hikes in similar terrain much closer to home to begin to acclimate to the conditions. As you near the date of the actual hike you may want to even add the backpack and gear to your treadmill routine. I would think finding a good pair (or two) of hiking boots/shoes to train in would be essential... break them in PRIOR to the trip... Use them so that you know them. As with any athletic venture, this type of venture depends on incremental training and quality equipment (especially footwear in this case)... A quality backpack would be key as well. Best wishes on attaining your goal. I applaud the fact that you have a physical goal beyond getting fit... You have a goal in mind that will help you maintain and improve your fitness level well into the future. Way to go!0
