Start with the couch to 5k app. Your lungs take a long time to recover and its a perfect way to build up your breathing :)
  • I'm an ex smoker, but from about 5 and a half years now. Try the c25k programme. That will get you started. I kicked off with that about 12 months ago (although admittedly i never actually finished - I just went my own way which was, in hindsight, a mistake). I just completed a 10k in November, have joined a running club and am training towards my first half marathon in March

HI there, I am trying to stop at the moment and I want to get back to running, do you know the C25K and Cto10k apps and programmes?, they give you a schedule that gets you from the couch to 5k in 6 or 8 weeks. It works, get good shoes take it easy build slowly and away you go! I am planning to do the same I just need to get rid of the weed, I cannot run whilst I am on the cigarettes obviously, good luck Debbie

I quit smoking 14 months ago and started running. It was tough and the lungs had to get used to working properly again. I started with interval training: walk 2 mins, run 1 min and changed this according to my fitness level. There are good apps for runners. Maybe you want to check " Jeff Galloway Training". Or the "couch to 5K" which brings you from notrunning to running a 5 K.
My advice after having been a smoker for 37 years: don't overdo it, even though your body might be fit, your not used to running and you won't have all the oxygen ready you need. That'll improve within no time, believe me. Just take it easy during the first few weeks. And you need good fitted shoes to prevent injury.
Well done on quitting, you will feel so much better and after running your first 1 or 2 miles you will be feeling like Arnold Schwarzenegger:bigsmile:

Heart rate monitor might be a good idea so you can keep an eye on that whilst training, handy tool for anyone not just the beginner.

I started running in October 2011ish. I didn't use any apps or programs, at the time, I planned a 5k route beforehand and then said that somehow, I would get round it, if I had to walk some it didn't matter, I would just complete the circuit. Then repeat. And then sign up to some kind of race, where you can't back out, no motivation like having people sponsor you to do something - I did a half marathon for charity and as soon as people started sponsoring me, I know I had to put in the work and I had to do it, otherwise their money is for nothing. Really makes you get out the door and go!

Unfortunately I now live in Dubai = no good running routes, and 6 months of the year its too hot to run outside!

    Good luck!

Here are all my beginner's tips:

    I always highlight point one:
    1. When you start out, it’s HARD! Even if you think you’re fit, running is so different to anything else you’ve done before you will get out of breath quickly. Stick with it. Can’t manage a minute? Go slow. Still can’t? GO SLOWER!

C25K gives great guidelines, but if you need distraction and love a good story, the Zombie 5K app is awesome!
