Getting Overheated with Zumba

So, I'm doing Zumba videos that I found on YouTube. I try to make sure they're routines to music I enjoy, but after about 10-15 minutes, I can feel the arteries in my neck pump and stick out and I start to seriously overheat - as if I'm going to pass out. I feel like I'm going to burst. I always break a sweat during the first song(so it's not when I start sweating LOL), and I used to really enjoy the workout. Now it's frustrating, because I really want to enjoy it and this problem is really hindering me. Since this is not my first time doing zumba, so I'm not sure what's wrong other than my body just can't handle it. Other Than Zumba, I'm not sure what else I can do, since I have bad knees and can't run. Any tips or advice?

I ordered a HRM, but it hasn't come in yet. Swimming is out of the question, we don't have an indoor pool nearby. Closest one is 45 minutes away. I may have to tough it out with some brisk walking for an hour a day, until that HRM comes in...0

Has your doctor medically cleared you to exercise? Suddenly starting to feel like that during a workout you used to be able to do sounds scary, and like something you should have checked out.0

Something you may want to consider: Sometimes people forget to breathe when they work out (happens all the time with novice weight lifters) and that causes your pressure to go up, it can overheat you and cause you to pass out. Make sure that you're taking in even breaths when you exercise.0

Did you just start? It sounds like you may be overdoing it. Try going about half the the speed that they are doing and SLOWLY build up. It takes about 30 days for your body to get used to doing an exercise. If it doesn't get better, you may want to talk to your doctor.0

Check in with your doctor, that does not sound normal!
You can do the stationary bike, it's easy on the knees. Start doing squats, they will strengthen the muscles around your knee and make it easier for you to eventually, do things like walk and run without pain.0 -

I'm not clear. How long ago was it that you did Zumba? What is before you put on weight or while you had the weight on? Suggestions would be when you feel that way take a breather, walk in place and drink some water. Maybe take your pulse at the same time to see where it is. When you catch your breath, start back at it. If it has been a fair amount of time since you did Zumba before, and you have not been active with exercise that challenges you with a similar difficulty, this is likely just a sign of being out of shape. If it has not been long, and you have been active with other similar types of exercise, then you probably want to see a doctor to make sure you don't have anything that needs to be dealt with which is hindering your ability to do Zumba.0

I would suggest walking to build some endurance if you're generally new to exercise, or newly back after an extended break. If this is a sudden change and you've been exercising all along and all of a sudden things are different, you should get it checked out with a doctor.0

It has been about 2.5 years since I've done Zumba, and I put on 30 lbs since then ( I weigh 230). I haven't really worked out since then, as I had a knee injury and had to have surgery. I really do like Zumba, but I guess I'm going to have to build up my endurance some and take it easier. March in place more, but it drives me crazy!0

That is a good plan. The long layoff and restricted activity due to the knee, and the extra weight will all play into this. 30 pounds is a lot to carry around while exercising. To encourage you, if you are otherwise healthy, your cardiovascular system will improve quite quickly at first. Keep at it, rest when needed.0 -
No all the ZUMBA videos on you tube are safe. Many are but you gotta be careful of your choosing and you HAVE to warm up first. That way your muscles and joint can gradually increase intensity. and when I say warm up I mean a slow non jarring routine for 5-10 minutes.
I would suggest you look at ZUMBA.com for a ZUMBA gold class near you. Gold is slower pace but just as fun and very low impact. I teach an 8 week session that starts with gold and then take students to regular ZUMBA ending with Zumba toning we increase gradually and students are usually surprised at their progress.
