Want to add weight training to ellipitcal training

I would like to add some weight training to my elliptical training program. So far I have been on the elliptical for about 45 minutes, 5 days a week. What are some basic exercises that I could ad to supplement this? I currently have access to a gym so most equipment is available to me. My main goal is weight loss but also some strength building. I am currently 6'0 and 247lbs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Free weights! Do you have access to a trainer who can help you with form and get you started on a program? Lifting= fat loss.

There are trainers available at the gym but I would prefer not to pay extra for this (money is really tight right now). I was planning on using youtube and past knowledge for form (I played rugby in High School and learned the necessary form for different lifts then). More of what I am looking for is a basic program that I could get started on with free weights.

I do the ellipitical and weights. At first I was focusing on cardio. Now I focus on weights and add cardio. I don't focus as much on the scales any more. Since Ive started the weights about five weeks ago. I went from squeezing into a size 12 to getting into a size 8 pants. Normally for me to fit in size 8 I would have to weigh around 150 or a bit lower. I'm 5'6" weight 166. I googled work outs on line.

    Strong Lifts 5x5

It's a good beginner program. The next "step up" would be Wendler 5/3/1.

I think a good place to start may be www.bodybuilding.com. I went there and did the Kris Gethin 12 Cutting the Fat Program (I think that is what it's called) and that's how I lost my first 20ish pounds and I just started my second cycle of the program. Easy to use, good compound lifts, and I can get the lifting done in about 45-60 minutes each lifting day. There are also instructional videos on how to do each lift. I started at 6'2'', 242 lbs and am now down to about 215 and pretty solid. Good luck.

Another good site for free help is www.nerdfitness.com. He covers some good basic strength moves that you can do without much equipment. Also, the Eat, Train, Progress group on MFP has some great mentors for fitness.
