I am currently in the second month recovery week and i am actually gaining weight. i lost about 8 pounds in the first month eating about 1900 calories on the fat shredder plan 50% protein 30% carbs and 20% fat. i was at a plateau for about 2 weeks and was not loosing weight or inches so i raised my calories to 2100 and same macros thinking i was not eating enough with this intense of a work out. now i have gained 1.5 lbs in about a week, or so the scale says i have not gained any inches though. i dont know what to do i have started p90x twice in the past and this has happened both times so i ended up quitting without finishing, i really want to see this through but i am getting frustrated. any ideas why this is happening to me?

How tall are you? How much do you want to lose? What is your current weight? What is your daily activity outside of your P90X exercise like?

While 1.5 pounds looks like a lot, in the big picture it is not. One week is a rather short time to go on since you could be retaining water or a whole bunch of other things. If I eat close to my calories, but happen to have a lot of sodium I can put on 2-3 pounds of water weight overnight. If I change my workout a lot, or start working out harder I can do the same. If I don't eat as much fiber as I usually do or don't drink enough fluids with my fiber, my weight will go up because of digested food that has not passe yet. All those and more can cause a 1.5 pound weigh gain. The best advice I can give you it keep at it.
  • i am 5'11" and 209, i would like to get down to 185 or so. I am a private music instructor so I am pretty sedentary most of the day. i drink a lot of water everyday but i will keep an eye on my sodium

I tried P90x and made it 62 days then quit becuse I didnt lose a pound or inches in places that would make my clothes fit differently. I do know I was stronger! I started getting that "V" shape on my upper body but I wanted to lose weight not bulk up! It is ALOT of work and time! You really want to see it pay off but for me it just didnt :/ I told myself I will try it again after I have lost some lbs on my own. I feel like its for already fit people that just want to tone up not for those who are trying to lose weight. wish I could help but Ive experienced the same thing! Maybe Tony Horton can ask the kids....

I would have to say you are not eating enough cals. say your sedentary rate is 2200, you would need to reduce enough cals to lose weight -3500 cals a week for 1 lb, ect. but you could be burning 700-800 cals on your workout which puts you way under cals.

    so try this.
Do 2 workouts with a heart rate monitor. this is what you will burn for the next few weeks every workout. (you will want to do this about every two weeks to make sure it is accurate.)
subtract that from your sedentary cal intake. Make sure your overall cals don't go below 1400.
just eat healthy. if you have a craving for carbs or fat choose healthy ones like nuts fruit and veggies. I find Ramen has a great source of iron this may help too.

I think people get the misconception that P90x is a weight loss program. It really is a strength and endurance building program. I stayed pretty even doing the first round. started off with eating 3000 calories and stayed even. I did lose a lot of inches though. I only lost weight when I started to mess with the calorie intake and reduced my calories for that program with the second and third round as I reduced to 2500 and then lost weight.

Hold on - people on here always jump on the "not eating enough" bandwagon.

More likely you are still eating too much. How are you calculating your calories burned from the P90X workouts? Use a HRM if possible. In reality it is probably less than you think. I only put in max 400 cals for the strength routines and maybe 600 cals for Plyo/Kenpo. Again it is a matter of how much energy you are putting in to it, how active you are in your workouts. Can vary dramatically.

I am a man so prob should have higher cal intake but I am eating 1,200-1,500 NET after P90X workouts, so rarely more than 1,900-2,000 total cals IN per day.

Losing 1kg per week from this diet and P90X.

but does your body look different?
  • thank you for all of the responses. i think i just needed some reassurance. i do feel like i am looking better but then i go to take measurements and no change. my clothes are fitting better so that is good. i do wear a heart rate monitor during workouts and average 600 calories a work out.

thats all that matters... you can tell your body changes and clothes feel better.. you are doing the right thing

Hey just realised you are a guy and prob trying to lose about the same weight as me. Without knowing your weight/height/BF% i can just assume you are similar to me.

I have found very little changes in inches though I am losing pounds. My stomach measurement has dropped about an inch, maybe 2 since new year but some was before I started P90X (I am on day 41). But I notice the difference, I look trimmer by far and less sticky-out belly. I think my muscles have tightened, especially my lateral core muscles so whatever I have lost from fat at the front, my muscles have tightened up all round to make it less off the inches.

Same with my chest. Actually have definitely lost some fat from my chest (typically goes first) and getting better definition. Pecs and back feel tighter and more pumped. Only lost an inch (which is to be expected initially then chest measurement will probably increase with more weight/resistance training).

In terms of losing mass, if you are only 20lbs from your target you prob haven't got much to lose, therefore you will need some tougher training + more weight. I am using a round of P90x to prepare my body for a return to heavy lifting. Certainly in the last 30 days of the programme I will also be hitting the gym for some lifting on top of the programme. If you are down to your last few pounds of weight to lose and/or you are now just trying to trim BF% then you will need a heavier regime than P90X (unless you are using bigish weights for it itself).
  • The program itself insists that the majority of changes happen during those final 4 weeks of the 13 week program. Since you are right there keep it up for the next month and see if it makes a difference. Maintaining the same calories you've been eating over the course of all 3 weeks works because the muscle you have been putting on each and every week have been having a cumulative effect on your sedentary BMR. Worst case scenario, can you honestly say that eating healthy and working out like a champion could do anything to HARM you compared to your pre-p90x lifestyle?

I agree - I am a P90X grad also and lost a lot of inches but not a lot of weight the first round. After that I really went in to full throttle with results and ended up where I am today :)

I am currently on week 4 of P90x but doing the lean version and am dropping weight and inches.

I think it dpeneds on which version you are doing - Classic, Doubles or Lean.
  • I lost 30lbs and 12% body fat doing P90X, I started at 240lbs, I ate a 1900 cal 50/30/20 Pro/Car/Fat diet for the the first 45 days, then switched to 40/40/20 @ 1900....for the rest of it...

In the beginning I was burning 1100 cal on Kenpo and Plyo, and around 750 on resistance days.

The nutrition is important for P90X, because you do have to eat, and what you eat is critical. But it worked for me. Still does.
  • Aprill20 - You look great, BTW! Your pics are really inspirational.

your 5'11 209 and only eating 1900 cals?

I"m 5'8'' 175 and the calculation in the P90X nutrition guide said i should be eating 2,400, might want to revisit the calculation.

The calc said i should be eating 2,700, but should round down to 2,400. I set MFP goal at 2,100 to help keep me honest and then adjust food choices over the day to try to hit 50/30/20 and hopefully come in under 2,400 still. thats my stratagey anywho.

I probably wont step on the scale until i'm done. Quite frankly, its meaningless data. I could care less what i weight, what i look like what pants i'm fitting into are far more realistic measures of progress. I'm a week in and i've noticed many changes, but i was up high on christmass cookie weight lol.

I don't see how you can sustain sub 2000 cals lol. But i also do my own ab and lift routine on top of p90x. personally, i don't think you have to go very low cal on the 50/30/20 diet. No one actually needs that much protien. Its the 'fat shreddar diet', not the 'build muscle diet'. I think one thing that makes it effective at fat shredding is the fat that protien is probably the least efficiently absorbed macro nutrient, and probably the hardest to turn into fat if you eat too much. because of that i think you would need less of a restriction then if you were eating a higher percentage of carbs and/or fat.

5'11 male consuming less than 2000 calories don't sound right. I feel like your BMR should be at least that.
  • P90X works differently for different people. I lost 90lbs in two rounds of P90X, but I was also almost 300lbs. I am starting another round now and looking to build more muscle so weight loss won't really be on par with before. Remember muscle weighs more than fat as well and starting in phase 2 you start to put on more muscle. The biggest thing with P90X though is to be HONEST WITH YOUR NUTRITION AND PORTIONS. I can't stress it enough. I see MANY people that I coach in my challenge groups complain of little or no weight loss after Phase 1, but they are not counting calories and eating right. This round I am eating totally clean, no processed food. I don't know if I provided any info to help you, but would be glad to help you any way I can. Good Luck!

i got a buddy that makes the meals for his wife out of the insanity meal plan and follows the recipe TO THE LETTER.

If your having trouble getting results, i got to say this would be the best way to be spot on with your nutrition.

Unless your a truely unhealthy weight, and bring this number down is extreamly important to your overall health, don't step on the scale. Honestly there is no point in it.

If you could look in the mirror and see exactly what you wanted, would it bother you if the scale said you were even 100 lbs more then whatever weight you THINK you should be? Its just meanless data thats pontentially going to make you second guess yourself when you really just want to remain focused
