NEW YORK CITY FITNESS!

Does anyone know about any free/low cost fitness events in NYC? Perhaps there is a weekend program somewhere, or a one day only big event coming up?

I'm thinking about finding a hike or zumba or yoga event somewhere. Outdoorsy ideas would be great as well.

What do you New Yorkers do to keep fit?

  • Take advantage of the subway stairs, get off a stop early, that'll give you up to 10 blocks to power walk or something. If you work close enough to home, invest in a bike. There is a website I joined, but havent used (lol) www.meetup.com , it has all kinds of things, mom meert ups, fitness, yoga, activities, etc.

Few options that you may consider

Yoga to the People - donation base yoga class yogatothepeople.com
Niketown Running club - free running club, meeting three days a week. Water, gatorade, luna bars offered after runs for free.

I have a gym in my apartment building so I can't give great advice about free fitness groups or anything, but I find that I get a ton of free exercise in NYC by just walking around every weekend. Yesterday, for example, I went to the gym in the morning and had a very vigorous swim for about 30 minutes, then spent the rest of the day walking around and window shopping. My afternoon walk wound up burning more calories than my workout!

There are always people running in Central Park and I think there are some more "mountainous" areas on the north end of the park as well if you want to climb around.

Here's one more idea...if you like walking. the Urban Trail Conference - $7 for 1st year - $10 yearly thereafter. They are a non-profit staffed, run by volunteers. They have several walks every week - most on the weekends. Either in the City or in suburbs but accesible by public transportation. Length varies from 2 -10 miles - most about 4-5 and pretty easy pace. Plus there is a volunteer leader who usually has interesting information about the area you are walking through. Usually you just show up at the appointed place and time. Number of people who show up - generally about 15-20 - sometimes less. And plenty of solos so don't worry about going alone. Most people are friendly - even may make friends. Most folks though are at least 40 - and many seniors (although the seniors are inspiring - most are remarkably slim and fit.)
Check out their website - and I think you can try a walk as a non-member for $3. I've lived in NYC most of my life, and with these walks I've been to places in the City and surrounding areas that I'd never seen before. Or learned things I never knew about places I've seen a million times. All while you are getting a healthy but not overly strenuous dose of exercise. Maric 5
