sharp groin/inner hip pain when running

Anyone else get this when running? or even walking sometimes? Doesn't happen often, but this morning suddenly started as I was running. I run two or three times a week, normally. I had to stop...re-stretch and start again, but since then, it's been flaring up a little just walking about the office and it hurts to stand on that leg for a little while, then it goes.
I'm guessing gentle stretching/anti-inflammatory will help, but just wondered if it happens to any other runners?

I had a similar pain this weekend after a week or 2 of random inner thigh cramps at all hours of the day and night. A rest day spent doing semi-pornographic stretching seems to have cleared it up for now-just a dull ache at this point although my inner thighs feel just this side of a cramp. Guess I'll try stretching some more-bring on the voyeurs lol.0

Couple questions. First, how does the pain feel? Is it a cramp, a sore muscle, of does it feel like something may be seriously wrong? Second, what kind of mileage do you do on your runs? Finally, what other exercise do you do? This could be something as trivial as a cramp, but if you've got a pulled groin or something it could be that you need to take a few weeks off.0

I try and run between 3-5 miles and I do lifting/kettlebells 3 days a week. It's a sharp, can't put weight on that leg kind of pain. But then it goes. I just have to stand still for a little while and then it eases up. It's not a cramp, definitely. I was able to complete my run this morning after stopping to do more stretches. Sometimes it's random when I'm just taking a stroll.0 -
Can you jump on it (one-legged jump)? When you do, does it cause a sharp pain? Sharp pain is a good indication of a stress fracture.0

Wait? What? A few weeks? Oh no-that will never work lol. My "same pain" is centered around that ropey/stringy thing that connects (I think) the top of your inner thigh to your crotch. It kind of radiates from there-but the inner thigh cramps were totally separate and encompassed the whole inner thigh. But it's not like muscle, cramp or other "regular" aches and pains. But it's more than tolerable, so I'll just leave it alone. OP-hope you get yours figured out.0 -

There's some great soft porn stretching in various yoga for runners vids on YouTube. Fiji mcalpine is particularly keen on opening your groin for the masses....0 -

I love runners. 'Nah, nothing has actually fallen off.... Of course I can still run...." :-D0 -

Yeah for most of us it lasts until the first time you're sidelined for a month over something that could have been taken care of in a week if you'd done something earlier. Or at least those occurrences make us paranoid for a few months afterwards :-)0 -
You should see my stretch routine now, after I've been laid off for 6 knuckle gnawing weeks with a bad calf pull.... :-)0

Yes I can hop on it (that's what a one legged jump is, right? ) so perhaps I've just strained something.
Perhaps I should just take myself off to the doc and get it checked out. Perhaps I'm just getting old and decrepit. Perhaps I need a hip operation. Perhaps I should just lop the leg off with a rusty saw... thanks for the suggestions guys, I do appreciate it.0 -
Try the yoga. It's working wonders for me, even if the woman is a bit of a sadist... :-)0

I think I will give it a good ol' try!0 -
Ok, hold on a minute. I have been doing yoga for more than 10 years. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that you should NOT stretch an area that hurts. Give it a break until you figure out what is wrong. You could be exacerbating an injury, especially if it is something like a ligament tear or an inflamed tendon.
What I would recommend, if you have access to a gym, is about two weeks off from running--you can still get your cardio in, just avoid anything high-impact. Try biking, or, even better, swimming.
Good luck--and I would spend some time looking at WebMD or similar to try to identify what kind of pain you have and what type of injury it might be a symptom of.0 -

I've had an issue before when I ran constantly and developed a pain in my hip flexor muscle/groin area. At the time my activity was only forward and not side to side. My pain was caused by an imbalancer in muscle strength. Adding weight training and mixing up cardio has helped me.0

I had something similiar this summer. I stopped running for about 4 weeks to let it heal but I think my biggest problem I really needed new running shoes and I was not stretching after running. After the 4 weeks when it wasn't hurting anymore, I went back to running with my new shoes and always stretched afterwards. I haven't had any problems since.0

Try doing some cross training bike, elliptical or swimming. I had a stress fracture in my hip and it was similar in pain to how you described and it was not constant. Either way cross training is a great habit to get into as much as I would rather run.0

Does it click?
I don't know about the OP, but for me-it's my left crotch-ish that hurts, and my right hip feels like it "needs" to click/pop, but despite the soft porn stretching, that hasn't happened yet...0 -
I get that too, mine (I think) is caused by the hills that i run on my route everyday, plus running on the same side of the street/sidewalk, it ends up putting that pressure on the same side of my leg .. just my thoughts.. kind of feels like I pulled a muscule on the inside of the upper thigh/groin area.
I usually stretch before/after and that helps, if it get too bad, I'll take a day or change routes to ease it up some.0 -
I strongly suggest you go and see your Dr.
I am re-habbing from hip/groin pain. I am a runner (on hold at the moment) and I do other workouts. I was having the same type of random flare ups and at times chronic pain. After going to physio, acupuncture, Dr., sports injury Doc and having an ultra sound and a CT scan they discovered that I had torn the cartlidge from the bone in my hip as well as having signs of osteo-arthritis. I was close to 6 weeks with no exercise.
Sports Doc thinks it could of been from doing lunges holding a weight and twisting and then the running aggravated it further.
I would hold off on exercise until you have it looked at. In the meantime ice and rest.
All the best.

Thanks guys, for all the suggestions. Think I may pop along to the ol' doc and get it sorted out. Don't want to take too much time off...especially after the holidays.0

I had a pain like that and th Dr. said sometimes we can get a "spur" (calcium) that forms. He did x-rays to rule it out and then just told me if it hurt take pain meds0

Ditto here. I've been doing yoga for about 10 years too and started running about 3 years ago. I think any injury I have gets WORSE when I try to fix it doing yoga. I get "warm" and then overstretch. The next thing you know I can't walk without pain.0
