Dumping the scale

About a week ago, I decided to TRY to dump the scale! This is a HUGE challenge for me. I am a scale junky. The problem - I know how to eat correctly, I exercise regularly, but I let the scale influence me tremendously. If my weight is up a pound or two, I get annoyed and pig out, then go back to healthy eating until I can get back on track. If my weight is down I often celebrate by eating (not intentionally), especially if I did not expect the drop. (I typically fluctuate about 5 pounds.) Seems like I have been trying to lose 10 pounds for 10 years and I am hoping dumping the scale will get me there.

Has anyone experienced this? Do you find getting on the scale is helps or hinders your goals?

  • I find the scale triggering, so I am gradually limiting how often I weigh myself. Previously it was daily, sometimes twice a day, now every few days. My goal is to weigh twice a month. If I remain on track with exercise and nutrition, I'll still lose weight at whatever rate just hopefully without the addition of "scale stress."

It has officially been 1 week for me - a milestone unless I am on vacation and can't find a scale. I am going to try to make it to next Wednesday!
  • I'm with you! I definitely need to do that as I find myself getting on the scale all the time. I think I will have to put it in the closet and take it out only once a week! I also tend to celebrate by eating so I think the scale hinders my goals. Thanks for posting this because it puts it back in my mind to remove the scale!

I dumped the scale last month, and did TOO well at it (in a bad way)! I decided that I wasn't going to stress over a couple pounds during the fun holiday season (which of course people shouldn't). But not having that check made me slack off a lot, and not have anything be accountable. I gained 15 pounds (about 10 REAL pounds). Sucks to be set back so much.

So just a word of caution not to go as hog wild as I did.
