Age is just a number...get on that ice!

Pad up and get out on that ice. If you fall...get up and keep going. What an excellent work out! :flowerforyou:

If it is something you really want to do, then who is to stop you? You are in control of your life, so if you want a chance to tie on those skates and roll around the rolladium then go for it.

    Do what makes you happy.
In life, no one makes it out alive anyways, so why not make it enjoyble
    (:

I lived on roller skates as a kid. Loved it. I used to skate up until the last Roller Skating rink was closed.
Age shouldn't hold you back. Take it easy and slow and build up your confidence and ability. Slow and steady will get you there.
  • I'm with you I loved skating when I was in my teens, I don't think I would try it due to my back fusion but if you want to try why not just use them in the house for awhile to see how they feel? At least that way you'll have walls and counters to grab if you need. I live by the theory anything I try that keeps me moving in any way is one step farther than I was going on the couch.
  • Hi there wife of bigfatarthur here ( at his request) 49 going on 50, anything with wheels and no motor is mine, scooters, bikes rollerblades. My advice, put on your skates, all the protection and go take a class, if you have done it as a kid you will be rolling in no time. go for it!!!

I skate!! I am 26...much older than most of the kids but all the ones who talk to me do not believe I am 26 they think I'm only 18-20ish. lol
I used to skate when I was a kid too. Guess what? When I was a kid I was fat and I skated! I see kids of all sizes there actually, and some girls are much bigger than me. I don't find as many people my age, but I see alot of older people who bring their kids to learn how to skate. Do you have children you could bring to learn to skate?
And I don't know if it will happen for you, but I didn't take long to relearn how to skate. I think I shocked the people working there...I was skating around the rink within an hour of entering the rink. I think I could have started sooner but fear kept me back. O and I almost never fall, but yes...when I fall it does hurt :( I once fell on my knee when my skate became untied and tripped me before I could fix it. It was a little swollen and bruised for 1-2 weeks. I bruise easy though...
I bought my own skates. Rentals kept giving me blisters, then my own kept giving me blisters. The annoying ones are at the back of my ankles. I've done moleskin and band-aids...then found some running socks at Walmart on clearance that are supposed to prevent blisters. They help more than the band-aids.
And I don't skate super fast. Back to falling...I try not to skate super fast and recklessly. I am sure I could skate faster if I wanted, like some of the teens that are good at skating but I prefer to avoid falling. I just skate to have fun. Plus, alot of little kids skate in front of you and you often have to dodge them. Or a lot of them will fall and you can't be skating recklessly if you can't control yourself and be able to dodge them.
Have fun!! I love the music!!

I love skating! I used to figure skate when I was younger and then I stopped and only go skating a couple times a year - but I'll tell ya, I'm still a great skater and I still can go fast - I haven't gone since I started on MFP but if I could still skate well before, I'm sure now its even better. My weight has never been something to slow me down too much while skating! Go for it! It's great exercise and its FUN! You'll enjoy it, if you fall down just get right back up! Just remember to bend your knees!

Your age shouldn't prevent you from doing the things you want to do. Go skating and enjoy!
  • i live across the street from an elementary school that has a track, so i will probably skate there since it's smooth, and close lol... i'll ask santa for skates for christmas, and let ya'll know how i do:) thanks for all the feedback:)
  • I started ice skating when I was 50 just over one year ago.
It is great fun and good exercise, I am now studying for my Bronze star exam including jumps and spins!
The oldest skater in my group is now 56 so age is no barrier.

I skated well into my 40s until I got GBS a year ago, an autoimmune disease that destroyed some nerve cells and impaired balance as a result. Loved it. Great for glutes too.

I started figure skating as an adult too, a few years ago! One of the greatest things I´ve done in my life, really. I had a great coach who wouldn´t let me do any advanced moves until I got a stable and safe feeling in my legs and clean basic technique... and today? I´m not too advanced in jumps, but I have fluency, clean turns and steps... and minimum nasty falls and injuries.

    @OregonsBiggestLoser:
I would say it´s never too late to try whatever you want to do. Start slow, try to get a sefe feeling and confidence, take a few lessons if you have a chance to. Good luck and have fun!

I'm 37 and I've went ice skating (horrible at it) and roller blading (slightly better at it) multiple times last year. You could always hug the rails until you get comfortable. It wouldn't hurt to put some on and try it out. If it doesn't pan out, it is just a few dollars and you could always work your way up to it later if needed. I think you might be pleasantly surprised though.

My child tried to teach me to go backwards on both but I never could. Yep, not skilled. Did I fall? You betcha! I only fell a few times altogether though because I was too cautious to take risks. If had been more of a risk taker, I might have managed the backwards move or at least a jump. That would have been awesome!

    It's excellent exercise!

Oh and my husband is in his mid-40's with a weight issue and no experience! He got out there. He was fine. He was scared spitless but by a few rounds he had a few basic moves. You have experience. That will help. Age, however, is not the issue.
