Apples make me hungrier - why?

If I am hungry and eat an apple, in 20 minutes I am hungrier than I was before eating the apple! If I have some peanut butter or cheese with the apple I'm fine, I just can't eat an apple by itself. Any idea why?

It kind of bugs me because I really like apples...

Good question, would love to know the answer as well considering the same happens with me lol!

The same happens to me. I've been told it is the high sugar content and that sugar causes hunger. I don't really buy that since the same doesn't happen with other high sugar fruits like grapes. Just with apples. But I love apples, so I just ignore the hunger if I know I don't really need to eat more.

Quizas because an apple is only like 60 calories.

A girl I work with says the same thing. So you're not alone. Personally, I've never had that problem. No idea what causes it though.

Dude, apples are 90-95% carbs. Once in your stomach it turns to energy almost immediately. Combining it with some protein or good fat (nuts) will definitely help with that empty feeling after eating that sweet, juicy, delicious apple. No......seriously.

I predict that this thread will contain the words blood sugar and/or insulin.

    Wait for it...

And I get fuller when I add more calories to it. Weird, huh?
  • Aren't apples a negative calorie food?

Thats what I read on the internet.....

I'm glad I'm not the only one to whom this happens! I just try and chug a glass of water when the second blast of hunger hits.

The carb thing makes sense. Thanks!

Same thing happens to me! Unless I eat them with a little peanut butter! YUM.

I was eating an apple as I read this, knowing that I would likely get hungry soon. It's happened to me all my life, and it's kind of annoying, especially since I don't like my apples with anything added (PB, etc), but I really like them.

where do you find LSD skittles? i can only find skittle colored paper. it's very unsatisfying for the first 30 minutes, so i find myself eating too much.

then the universe turns into a giant squid and i miss work

I have just the opposite reaction.

Because apples are acidic, contribute to stomach acid and make you feel hungry..

Have you tried eating a couple of apples instead of just one? There aren't many calories in one apple so I would recommend eating as many as you like until you're full.

I was always told that apples have a lot of pectin and that's supposed to keep you fuller? Apparently because I believe it, it must be true, because I don't have that problem

Maybe try adding a bit of protein--peanut butter, cheese--and that will help?

If you add fat/protein to it --like cheese or peanut butter, as you observed -- it slows the absorption of glucose into the blood stream and thus you stay fuller longer because you've reduced the carb-induced blood sugar spike. That's my assumption.

I used to tell people this all the time and they would look at me lke I had two heads....Apples make my tummy grumble almost right afterwards and they leave me STARVING !!!!

    SO what causes this?

Don't have that problem ... but just in terms of nummy goodness ... I like an apple with a good old fashioned piece of cheddar or dipped in honey greek yogurt ... like I'm eating for breakfast now...
