eating disorders

Just a short PSA to remind people eating disorders are real and serious. It's not something to joke about.

some other notes:
- anyone can struggle with an eating disorder, regardless of weight, race, sex, age, etc.
- an eating disorder is a mental illness; "JUST EAT!" doesn't help anyone, professional therapy and support does
- many overweight people struggle with eating disorders and are dismissed because "losing weight is always healthy!" even if they are hurting themselves physically and emotionally. this is not okay to encourage or enable
- joking about eating disorders is hurtful and offensive to those who battle them

I had an eating disorder my freshmen year of high school. It got so bad that I was eating 100 calories a day if that. I lost so much weight, but still felt fat. I was constantly passing out and turned into a really angry person. It took me about half a year to get over it. It's true that you can't just "eat something." You are literally terrified of food. My doctor told me bluntly that I was going to die if I kept doing what I was doing. After that I started forcing myself to eat. It was the hardest thing that I ever had to do. I gained all the weight back and yet I was much happier than I was when I was skinny.

Moral of the story.....eating disorders can easily start if you take things too far, and it is no joke.
