The Death Of Common Sense
Obituary
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair; and
- Maybe it was my fault..
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because
so few realized he was gone..
If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I'll drink to that. :drinker: :flowerforyou:0

Oh good lord. I've seen this and several things like it. All things tends towards entropy. Every previous generation rails that the current one is destroying common sense and reliability. It is the nature of human beings to claim that it was "better back then."

Oh, and there is so much to add to that...0

Well you hit that nail on the head. What a sorry world we live in.
It will only take World War 111 for Common Sense to raise from dead like lazarus, and for the four UGLY stepbrothers to be banished from the world for a period of respite.
I'll drink to that as well :drinker:0 -
Also, the McDonald's woman suffered third-degree burns over six percent of her body and lesser burns over 16%. Of her ENTIRE body. They had the coffee set much, much hotter than they should have.
For good, third-degree-causing, skin-grafting reasons. (Unless you're cool with third degree burns and skin grafting from your morning cup 'o joe. In that case, my hats off to you, sir.)
Otherwise, your anecdote fails.0 -
Sad, but true. I hope I am raising my children better than some...with common sense. Lord knows I'm trying!0

I read it... I agree... ok??0

Far more eloquently put than I could have managed, you took my thoughts and conveyed them well.0 -

Common Sense isn't common any more...
Neither is the younger generations work ethic...0 -
Yup. That's pretty much it. To both the OP and Melynda!

I would add that courtesy has also passed on many many months ago...0

I work full-time, go to university part-time.
As for my spare time, I volunteer in Barnardos and am also a part time carer for my ex's grandma.
These comments and posts are ill-informed and rude at best, Where I volunteer there's 7 of us, 3 of that 7 are younger than I am and I am only 20. The rest are well in their 70's. Should I now go about labeling everyone from 21 to 69 lazy and selfish?0 -
Common sense is so rare it should be considered a super power...0

safe to say you're the exception, not the rule0 -

Have you talked to enough people to come to that consensus?
I've been volunteering there for nigh on a year now, I have yet to see many middle-aged people volunteer.
Plenty of younger people though.
Edit: I'm not trying to be rude here, I just think it's an unfair label0 -

Dude, I'm a year younger than you and my kids are 5 and 3. I agree, they have zero common sense but still have more than this post.0 -

Ur really the exception...... Most youth have their hands out and want things given. They have no desire to work hard.0 -

BTW: The woman burned by the McDonald's coffee suffered 3rd degree burns. Common sense would indicate that coffee that hot should not be in paper cups, I would say. A jury agreed.0

Really and how would you know. Have you been everywhere in the world? Met every person? This not true of me, any of my many friends for that matter.0
