BACK TO MFP! Looking for support? Medical clinic question?

Hello to all you dedicated (hopefully) fitness pals! I did this 3 1/2 years ago and lost a good amount weight. Then I got lazy and comfortable in a dysfunctional relationship with someone who was basically permanently sedentary and I followed suit! Well, I am back and looking to lose weight and feel better about myself!

I'm definitely looking for people to connect with on here for support/encouragement! Most of my friends could definitely use a burger or 2 so I lack in good motivators who just say "you don't need to lose weight, you're perfect". Well, guess what, they are lying (or just trying to be good friends). So if you're interested in teaming up with me, maybe challenging eachother to miles walked, time excercising? Whatever? Please connect with me, I'd love to see what works for you!

Also, my boss was telling me about this place she went to, it's a medical weight loss center where they basically remove carbs from your diet and inject you with B12. She lost 30 lbs in 4 months and hit her goal weight. So no, it was not like she needed to lose 100+ and lost that amount. I am shocked and definitely getting seduced by the idea! Thoughts on this? Advice? I'm eating fewer carbs, eating less, and working out 4 times a week right now.

Thanks to anyone who helps! Have a great day!

  • Welcome back! There's lots of support here, and as you probably learned before, writing down what you eat makes such a difference in controlling what you're willing to eat.

I wanted to address the weight loss clinic: it sounds like an expensive quick fix. It's not teaching you to eat better, and it's not at all sustainable. How many Atkins dieters do you know who have kept off the weight? Carbs are essential for normal, healthy brain function, which is why people who cut out carbs completely tend to be cranky and have trouble concentrating. The idea behind the vitamin B12 is probably to counteract this drop in neural function, but again, it's temporary. As your mama might have told you, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I assume you're looking for long-term weight loss, so you'd be better off (in the long run) learning how to visualize portion sizes, cooking healthy, indulging occasionally, and making a lifestyle change. And you won't feel like crap doing it!

(Disclaimer: I'm not a physiologist, but as a vet student and former anatomy/physiology teacher, I've had quite a bit of physiology in my day.)
  • Great! Thanks for the advice, that is exactly what I was thinking about the weight loss clinic, but admit to being enticed by my boss' quick drop! I've definitely been in to portion control and walked 2 miles today as well. Going to do this the healthy way for sure!

sounds like dr. bernstein or whatever.
my friend was on it and lost like 95lbs in 6 months.
she looks absolutely amazing so i immediately researched it.

they do use b12 injections. but trust me, it is SO unrealistic.
they want you to eat only 800 cals per day. that is NOT healthy. after you're off it, you'll gain it back like crazy.
oh and did i mention it's about 2000$ every month?! lol no thank you.

Have to agree with everyone else, sounds like an insanely expensive way to get the weight off. I think I've lost the same weight on and off for years but realize a lifestyle change is what really matters and lasts long term. Although I want to look better, feeling better is more important, darn :blushing: I've started back to a more regular routine of walking so let's compare notes and cheer each other on!

Do you have a b12 deficiency?

If you don't, then the B12 that you are paying them to inject into your body will wash out in your urine. B vitamins are water soluble and the excess are excreted in your urine.

It sounds like you are going to be paying for some rather expensive and brightly colored pee, and your doctor is going to profit nicely from your lack of knowledge.

Here is a link to the NIH site that has credible information about B vitamins. It lists the foods that you can eat to make sure you ingest adequate amounts.
