Body Media

Hi everyone I know this topic appears a lot in the forums and I've tried to search and research the answer I am looking for and can't find it so please be easy on me! I just recieved my Body Media yesterday and I love it so far. I am just curious does it automatically track my exercise and record how many calories I burn during said exercise or do I have to manually put it in? Do I still need to wear my HRM during exericse or does Body Media act as one? Also I am taking hot yoga classes right now is it okay to still wear my armband in the heat and get it soaked with sweat? Thanks in advance for any help/advice! Happy Friday!

All you have to do is wear it all day long and then connect it up to your computer at the end of the day or whenever :) It's fairly accurate but I supplement it with a Polar FT4 for any calories it might not pick up during a hard workout when I want everything to count! Generally BodyMedia `does a fine job at acting as a HRM and such...not sure how accurate the pedometer is which is why I will be saving up for a fitbit :)

It will all sync with MFP when you plug it in if you have them connected. Don't freak out if you connect first thing in the morning though - lots of times it comes through with negatives! The day averages out. Pedometer seems pretty accurate, but I'm generally well over 12,000 steps a day between running and working (walking through classrooms, out at recess with students, etc) so I don't follow that part closely. I have found the calories burned to be less than a HRM, so I use this to be sure.

I actually don't have it automatically do it, as I only record workouts and I go to my activity manager (in Body Media site) and determine calories, then add them in myself.

As for the hot yoga - more power to you, but I don't know if it will affect it. I have sweat pretty bad over the course of a workout and it doesn't seem to affect it...

If you synch your BMF with the MFP app, it will import the exercise calories you've burned.

And it's okay to wear it during hot yoga, as the amount of sweat you're producing is one of the measurements it takes to calculate calorie burn. Don't, however, wash the sensor or go swimming in it.

And for the pp, it's VERY accurate as a pedometer.

So everyone records their exercise through the Body Media rather than MFP? If I use my HRM is there a way for me to record the calories burned to the Body Media? Sorry so confused by this part of it!

This is why I only record 1 calorie with my exercise. I'd like to track that I did it but not have the calories added to my goal. I just go off of my TDEE from what the BMF says I burn. Your BMF and your HRM probably won't have the same amount of burned calories. I have found that sometimes its pretty close but I have had a time it was about 100 cals different so hard to say which is closer. I think the BMF which has the lower amount. If you'd rather use your HRM you could just not wear your BMF then when you plug it in you have the option to go to Edit Off Body and you can manually enter calories there.
