    Muse - Hysteria

It just does stuff to me
  • I feel I have to mention the Mayones/Seymour Duncan Regius competition XD It's a solo competition for a Mayones Regius 7 custom; that is basically one of the best guitars in the world customized how you want. It's beautiful. Anywho, these are the two entries that stick out to me the most:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L82Fd3RlnJ8&feature=youtu.be
I tend to like more melodic and interesting solos and not pure technical shredding. These two are incredibly impresive.

As far as my favorite solo, it's so tough. I was looking through Periphery and they're all so fantastic >_<! Icarus Lives, Make Total Destroy, Froggin Bullfish, Muramasa, Jetpacks Was Yes, etc! If you don't know them you should check them out. Plus, if you're looking at any great guitaring you can't forget John Petrucci.

The guitar solo at end of "Shout" by Tears for Fears.

    Yes!

I always enjoy a good one solo based mostly on one or two notes. The Who - I Can See for Miles, or similarly, the Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated, and slightly in the same vein, Tommy Gun by the Clash.

    Anything by Prince.

Here's a guy who solos in every scale you can think of:

A lot of great solos on here! I'm surprised no one has mentioned Santana. So much danceability... Yes, I made up a word. Chill.

I read all the comments and I must say you all have excellent choices, I would have put many of them down myself but I thought I would add something new in case someone wants to check out some awesome guitar work,

Warren Haynes played a show in central park with Dave Matthews - look up the "Jimi Thing" version from that show, and excellent solo that goes on and on.

Check out Tim Reynolds playing "Kashmir" - not so much a solo as the whole song is just the guitar so its more like an instrumental but it will blow your mind.

the hell freezes over version of Hotel California

  • La Villa Strangiato - by Rush. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNilsLf6eW4

Well IMO I would start with the instrumental work of Eddie Van Halen

    Eruption
    Spanish Fly
    Cathedral
    316
    Mean Streets Opener

But those are pure instrumentals, if you specifically want something interesting as mart of a song, I would HIGHLY recommend....

Alter Bridge "slip into the void"....Mark Tremonti is the best current modern guitar player going.

You Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest

    Runaway - Bon Jovi

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

    Eruption - Van Halen

Its odd, when I think of Runaway I cant even remember the guitar part, I can just think of the opening keyboards and the chorus. Wierd.

A couple of these are not necessarily "solos", but:

    The Duallist - Iron Maiden
    Hotel California - Eagles
Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
Icarus' Dream Suite - Yngwie Malmsteen
    Crossroads - Clapton
Revelation (Mother Earth) - Randy Roads

and just too many more to mention

Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam. The whole song, the guitar is AMAZING. So chilled out.
Also Bat Country, Avenged Sevenfold really gets you going.
The solo in Dry Ice by Green Day, probably not great in a technical sense but I really like it.
Not a solo either, but the guitar in Alice in Chains - I know something. FUNKY. (As is the bass.)

Warren Haynes is incredible, I went to his Gov't Mule concert in Boston on Halloween a few years ago and they did a 3+ hour set. The first half was their original music and the second half of the set they played all Pink Floyd and even broke out the inflatable pig. Check out the live album called Mule-o-ween from Boston in 2008... It was awesome.

Now I also have to add Warren Haynes - endless parade to my list
